Fur fans flock to Toronto’s Furnal Equinox 2019
Monday, March 25, 2019
From March 15 to 17, the Canadian city of Toronto played host to the tenth Furnal Equinox, an annual event dedicated to the “furry fandom.” Wikinews attended. Programming ranged from music to gender, science to art, covering dozens of aspects of the varied subculture. The event’s featured guests were visual artists Moth Monarch and Cat-Monk Shiro, as well as the co-owners of US fursuit costume builders Don’t Hug Cacti.
The event raised nearly CDN$11,000 for Pet Patrol, a non-profit rescue organization in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, run by volunteers. This exceeded their goal of $10,000, the funds needed to finish a rural sanctuary. The furry community is well-known for their charitable efforts. Along with direct donations, the funds were raised through a charity auction offering original artwork, and a fursuit design by guests of honour “Don’t Hug Cacti.” Last year, Furnal Equinox raised funds for a farm animal sanctuary.
While only 10–15% of people within the fandom own a fursuit according to a 2011 study, event organizers reported this year 908 of the 2240 attendees at Furnal Equinox brought at least one elaborate outfit to the event. The outfits are usually based on original characters, known as “fursonas”.
Guests of Honour Cherie and Sean O’Donnell, known within the community as “Lucky and Skuff Coyote”, held a session on fursuit construction on Saturday afternoon. The married couple are among the most prominent builders in the fandom, under the name Don’t Hug Cacti. The scale of their business was evident, as Sean had made over a thousand pairs of “handpaws”, costume gloves.
The couple encouraged attendees to continue developing their technique, sharing that all professional fursuit makers had developed different techniques. They felt that they learned more from failed projects than successful ones, citing the Chuck Jones quote that “every artist has thousands of bad drawings,” and that you have to work through them to achieve. Cherie, known as Lucky, recalled receiving a Sylvester the Cat plush toy from a Six Flags theme park at age 10. She promptly hollowed the toy out, turning it into a costume. Creating a costume isn’t without its hazards: the company uses 450°F (232°C) glue guns. They’re “like sticking your hand in an oven.”
Other programming included improv comedy, dances, life drawing of fursuiters, a review of scientific research by a research group at four universities called FurScience, a pin collector’s social, and workshops in writing.
The “Dealer’s Den” hall was expanded this year, with even more retailers and artists. While many offered “furry” versions of traditional products, at least one business focused on “pushing the boundaries of fursuit technology.” Along with 3D printing a bone-shaped name tag when Wikinews visited, Grivik was demonstrating miniature computer screens that could be used as “eyes” for a fursuit. The electronic displays projected an animation of eyes looking around, blinking occasionally. The maker has also developed “a way to install a camera inside suit heads, to improve fursuiter visibility.” He hopes the tech would reduce suiting risks and accidents. Without the need for eyeholes, fursuit makers would have “more options for building different eyestyles.”

A breed of dog which is rather popular is Morkie. This is a dog which is a cross between a Yorkshire terrier and a Maltese. A littler of Morkies can be anywhere from two to six pups and they can live to be anywhere from 14 to 16 years of age. A Morkie is a dog that is very sociable and dearly comes to love his owner and longs for affection. Morkies love to cuddle. However when confronted with a stranger they will bark. If introduced to the stranger by their owner they will be sociable. This breed of dog is also great around children. Morkies are great to have if you live in an apartment because they count as miniature dogs. An average Morkie grows to be 6 to 9 inches tall but there are some which can grow to be 15 inches tall and they weigh between 5 and 16 lbs. Be aware that this type of breed is affectionate and gentle therefore it does not respond well to harsh discipline.
Morkies do not shed much but it is best to keep their hair short and shampooed in order to be sure that the fur doesn’t build up with dirt. You must brush your Morkie’s hair daily. Another thing to remember about this breed is that starting from puppyhood you should brush your dog’s teeth at least twice a week so that they won’t have the tendency to lose their teeth at a young age. Morkies like to have constant attention or else they get bored and lonely so it’s a good idea to have toys for them with which they can occupy themselves. Otherwise the dog can start chewing on objects they find lying around. Morkies love going on long walks so when time allows taking them for strolls in the park is ideal. For instance a twenty minute walk can help your Morkie burn off some calories and loose some excess energy. Morkies are an adorable looking breed of dog and are easy to love. You can choose from a large assortment of Morkies at Little Puppies Online. They have both males and females available. You can go to their site and see pictures of the Morkies available. Each picture has the Morkie’s name and gives a brief description about them. There are many of these wonderful dogs just waiting to be taken home. They are ideal for apartment living as they are miniatures, they are great with children and since they love long walks they are also great for homes with gardens as they can romp to their heart’s content. This is a breed of dog that has so much love and affection that you just have to love them. So if you are looking to have an adoring and faithful companion but don’t want a large breed dog then a Morkie is well worth the consideration. If you happen to live in Ohio you can make an appointment with Little Puppies Online and go and see the dogs in person and choose a Morky puppy for your own

Toxic chemicals found in four Canadian politicians
Thursday, January 4, 2007
Toxic chemicals were found in four Canadian politicians after they volunteered to have their blood tested as part of Environmental Defense’s report titled Toxic Nation on Parliament Hill.
The federal politicians that were tested are:
- Environment Minister Rona Ambrose,
- Health Minister Tony Clement,
- NDP Leader Jack Layton, and
- Liberal Environment Critic John Godfrey.
Godfrey at number 55 had the highest total number of pollutants followed by HealthMinister Tony Clement and Jack Layton at 54 and Environment Minister Rona Ambrose at 49.
They were tested for a total of 103 chemicals, which are related to cancer, developmental problems, respiratory illnesses, and nervous system damage. The chemicals found in them were mainly from household items which can cause cancer. In total, 54 carcinogens, 37 hormone disruptors, 16 respiratory toxins, 54 reproductive or developmental toxins, and 33 neurotoxins were found within the four politicians.
According to Dr. Rick Smith, Environmental Defence’s executive director, the politicians are more contaminated than the ordinary citizens tested last year.
“Our tests show that pollution affects everyone. From Parliament Hill to kids in Vancouver and Saint John, harmful pollutants are contaminating the bodies of Canadians no matter where they live, how old they are or where they work, play or go to school,” said Dr. Rick Smith. “I don’t know why that is. Maybe it has to do with their strange lifestyle — eating out a lot and a high-stress existence,” he said.
“Maybe its attributable to the unique lifestyles these guys lead,” Mr. Smith said. “Politicians have a very strange, very stressful lifestyle that results in them grabbing a bite to eat when they can and eating a lot of junk food.”
All four politicians were more polluted than child and adult volunteers that participated in a survey released last June for pollutants in families.
An account of the Esperanza Fire from an animal rescuer
Saturday, December 2, 2006
As families fled their homes in the early morning hours on Thursday October 26, there was no warning. The Esperanza Fire southeast of Los Angeles and West of Palm Springs, California, had ballooned under the influence of Santa Ana winds to more than 19,000 acres as of the morning of October 27. No time to get the animals, no time for crates or even a leash. Sadly, owners left behind not only their horses, lamas, donkeys, chickens, rabbits, but also their dogs and cats.
Many of the families who did manage to evacuate their pets found themselves in the parking lot at the Fellowship in the Pass Church Red Cross Shelter where a MuttShack Animal Rescue team caught up with them.
Pam Anderson, Director of the emergency Red Cross shelter said that many people with animals had come and left.
The air was thick with smoke, and ash was raining down on the parking lot where dog owners, not able to take their dogs into the shelter were camping out in pup tents andin their cars.
Those who could afford it checked themselves into pet friendly hotels in nearby towns.
Some were prepared. Jane Garner, a small dog breeder was able to get all her animals out, and had set up her puppy runs alongside her RV in the parking lot. Others were not doing too well, having left home without as much as a leash.
The same scenario played out at the Red Cross shelter at Hemet High School. Animals were being boarded in vans, trailers and cars and small travel crates.
When MuttShack Animal Rescue arrived, a small fracas had sent several dogs off in different directions, running out of the school parking lot down busy streets necessitating an instant rescue response.
The Incident Command for the Esperanza Animals, Ramona Humane Society in San Jacinto welcomed MuttShack‘s offer to help at the shelters.
Ramona Humane Society had recently published a notice in their Newsletter about the newly passed “PETS Act”and warned owners not wait until a major disaster such as an earthquake or fireto prepare. “Be proactive to ensure that your pet will be taken care of.”
MuttShack and PetSmart Charities set up ad hoc facilities for the animals at both shelters.
The Red Cross shelter, run by Madison Burtchaell of the Orange County Red Cross was very accommodating about allowing a small emergency pet shelter adjacent to the School.
Barbara A. Fought of PetSmart Charities, an organization that works with animal welfare organizations and provide assistance in disasters, provided crates and emergency supplies.
MuttShack and Red Cross volunteers, Martin St. John, Tom Hamilton, and Steve Meissner helped assemble the crates to secure a safe environment for evacuated pets.
It was a great relief for evacuees who had camped out in the parking lot to finally leave their vehicles and relax at the shelter, setting up their cots to grab some sorely needed rest.
Firefighters and residents reported loss of wildlife and animals. The Esperanza fire burned 34 homes, consumed 40,000 acres and cost five Firefighters their lives before it was contained four days later on October 30. Firefighting operations cost nearly $10 million.
MuttShack Animal Rescue is a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization active in disasters and dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and care of lost or discarded dogs, cats and other animals.

US Food and Drug Administration reports melamine found in contaminated pet food
Friday, March 30, 2007
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced at a press conference today that a chemical used in the manufacture of plastics was found in recalled pet food from Menu Foods.
The FDA found melamine in samples of Menu Foods pet food and in samples of wheat gluten, imported from China, which was used as an ingredient. The FDA analysis, however, does not confirm the presence of the rodenticide aminopterin, which was reported March 23 by the New York State Food Laboratory.
According to Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine, melamine is used primarily to make plastic kitchenware, although it has been used as a fertilizer in Asia.
Sundlof also indicated that the presence of melamine in the urine of cats that died from kidney failure was revealed through testing. He stressed that melamine was not determined to be the source of illness or deaths in the affected animals.
Sundlof suggested that melamine would not be found normally in pet food.
At a news conference Friday, Paul Henderson, President and CEO of Menu Foods, indicated that Menu Foods is satisfied that the contamination problem was related to melamine and not aminopterin. “One week ago, some of the dedicated researchers who had been investigating this matter reported the discovery of a single, toxic compound in our pet food,” said Henderson in his opening statement. “That, seemingly, cleared the way for us to address the problem, deal fairly with the pet-owners who had been injured, put our business back together, and move on,” he continued.
“In the intervening week, other top scientists have been unable to validate the findings. That is, they were unable to find the toxin – called aminopterin – in our pet food, or in any of the component ingredients. It was also brought to our attention that some veterinary experts held the view that aminopterin was inconsistent with what was being observed in dogs and cats,” Henderson said.
Menu Foods has determined that melamine in wheat gluten from a new US supplier was the likely source of contamination, and that they are confident that the issue has been resolved. “Melamine has been found in the wheat gluten from a new supplier in the United States, who sourced this wheat gluten in China,” said Henderson. “This is the same ingredient that Menu Foods made reference to in its recall press release of March 16. Melamine has not been found in the wheat gluten that we obtain from our other suppliers.”
Henderson refused to name the supplier of the wheat gluten, leaving that up to the FDA. “We have had correspondence with the FDA and we know that they are diligently following-up on the supply of the suspect wheat gluten. It is not our place to name the supplier as we do not want to interfere in any way with the important investigation they are conducting.”
Menu Foods is maintaining the warning on the previously recalled product. “The recalled product is unfit for consumption by pets. It contains melamine. The pet food that we have manufactured after March 6 is safe and healthy,” stated Henderson.
Menu Foods is the manufacturer of several brands of cat and dog food subject to a March 16, 2007 recall.

- Pharmacy Technician Van Nuys
By Adriana J. Noton
A dentist is a type of medical doctor who specializes in curing ailments that have to do with the mouth, as well as dealing with issues pertaining to general oral hygiene. This kind of doctor operates from both hospitals as well as private surgeries.
Dentists undergo intensive training comprising of disciplines such as chemistry, biology, mathematics, statistics as well as physical science. Training lasts for plus-minus 7 years, of which 4 is dedicated to basic medicine and physiology studies. The remaining years are then mostly dedicated to specialist studies in dentistry.
In addition to the more usual function of treating dental ailments and dealing with oral hygiene, they also offer cosmetic service such as decoration of teeth and the surgical reshaping of jaws and other facial feature for make over purposes.
Government dentist, also referred to as public practitioners, usually deal with essential life saving issues and emergency situations, as well as basic oral care issues, as opposed to private practitioners, also referred to as private practitioners, who are more at liberty to offer cosmetic services aimed at achieving superficial results which are not aimed at saving lives.
As such, public practitioners tend to be more affordable because they offer more life saving services, especially if they operate in rural settings where public health issues need urgent attention. This is also as a result of the fact that they are usually subsidized by the government with the express aim of making basic public health facilities affordable for all.
Private practitioners on the other hand tend to have higher prices because they are mostly frequented by people who are in a position to afford the best and most high tech health care facilities. This type of clientele is also prone to make use of the cosmetic element of the service provided.
Some practices also have dental assistants whose function is to prepare files and keep records, sterilize equipments, help during surgery, mix medicines, as well as make regular follow ups with patients. They also receive good technical training to enable them to be efficient aids to the dentist.
Some also offer dental therapy, which is mostly directed at children, the aged as well as people with serious dental ailments. The emphasis is more on basic dental hygiene as well as practical lessons on how to look after your teeth and mouth, with the aim of improving the quality of life of the patient.
They work closely with dental technicians, who provide them with the auxiliary materials that are used in procedures; such as bridges, dentures, as well as crowns. The dentist decides on the provider that is suitable for his needs as well as those of his patients.
It is always beneficial to form a close and honest relationship with your dentist; they become a family doctor who is responsible for monitoring the oral health of the entire family. The oral health of the family is looked after effectively, and children also learn to look after their teeth and mouth very early in their lives.

Jawbone found in Aruba is not Natalee Holloway’s
Thursday, November 25, 2010
A jawbone found in Aruba is not that of missing American Natalee Holloway, who was a recent high school-graduate at the time of her disappearance. Officials confirmed the news after Dutch scientists completed tests on the bone. The jawbone, which also had a wisdom tooth with it, was found by an American tourist close to the Phoenix Hotel. A second bone had also been found by another tourist earlier this month.
The bone was sent to the Netherlands Forensic Institute where scientists completed tests. They compared the bone to dental records given to them by Natalee’s father, from which they confirmed the the bone was not that of Natalee, although it was human. It was said to be unlikely that the bone was Holloway’s as there is no physical evidence that she was murdered.

Taco Stein, the Aruban Solicitor General, released a statement after the announcement was made. He commented on the speed of the identification; he said that they had quickly ruled out Holloway because her records had shown that she had her wisdom teeth previously removed.
Tim Miller, the Director of the Texas EquuSearch, released a statement after talking to Natalee’s father. He said “Dave [Natalee’s father] has been in contact with Aruban authorities and spoke with FBI this morning, the agent working the case. Dave believes it is Natalee.”
An attorney for Natalee’s mother, Beth Twitty, released a statement saying “Beth accepts the forensic conclusions, is emotionally exhausted from the inexplicably long wait, and deeply disappointed in the time and manner in which she learned of the results.” He commented on the Aruban authorities saying that “Apparently Aruban prosecutors were more sensitive to media concerns than the painful vigil of a mother.”
Natalee Holloway disappeared on the island in 2005 while on a school trip. She was last seen leaving a nightclub with three men, one of which was later identified as Joran van der Sloot. Van der Sloot was detained twice by police but has never been charged with Holloway’s disappearance. He is currently in Peru facing a different murder charge. Aruban authorities have said that they are checking neighboring islands to find a match for other missing persons.
