Chinese Foreign Minister visits India amid recent standoff in Ladakh

Saturday, March 26, 2022

Yesterday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended bilateral talks with Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.

Wang arrived in New Delhi Thursday night after visiting Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Wang discussed the recent Indo-China skirmish in Ladakh which led to the death of twenty Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers and showed interest to conciliate the strained relations between the two countries.

Jaishankar said that the border needs to be completely demilitarised for normal relations with China. He added that, “the frictions and tensions that arise from China’s deployments since April 2020 cannot be reconciled with a normal relationship between the two neighbours.”

Doval called for a de-escalation at the border. Several talks in the past on the level of military commanders at the border have not resulted in any solution. Both the countries have thousands of troops and warfare equipment amassed at the borders.

The ministers also talked about the current situation in Ukraine. Both the countries called for an immediate ceasefire. Both India and China have close bilateral ties with Russia and have not yet condemned its invasion of Ukraine.

Wang arrived in India in secrecy without any notification from either of the governments to the public. Wang left India for Nepal late Friday following an initiative by China to strengthen relations with South Asian countries.

Previously, India criticised the comments made by Wang Yi about the disputed territory of Kashmir at the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Summit held in Pakistan.

SpaceX scrubs Falcon I rocket launch

Monday, November 28, 2005

SpaceX called off the much-delayed inaugural launch of their new Falcon 1 rocket on Saturday from Kwajalein’s Omelek Island launch site. The intent was to launch the U.S. Air Force Academy’s FalconSat 2 satellite, which will monitor plasma interactions with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere.

The launch was delayed, then finally cancelled after an oxygen boil-off vent had accidentally been left open. The oxygen was unable to cool the helium pressurant, which then proceeded to evaporate faster than it could be replenished. A main computer issue, probably serious enough to cause a scrub on its own, was also discovered.

This long-anticipated flight was originally expected to be launched in January 2005, however a series of setbacks forced a series of delays, with the flight most recently scheduled to be in early 2006. It was intended to be launched from the Kwajalein atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The maiden voyage was originally intended to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with a Naval Research Laboratory satellite and a Space Services Incorporated space burial payload.

Thursday, March 24, 2005

San Jose, California — A woman eating a bowl of chili at a Wendy’s restaurant bit into a chewy bit that turned out to be a human finger. She immediately spat it out, warned other patrons to stop eating, and upon recognizing the object as a finger, vomited.

“I’m more of a Carl’s Jr. person,” the 39-year-old Las Vegas woman, Anna Ayala, told Knight Ridder. She said this incident was her first visit to a Wendy’s restaurant. Ayala described how she found the finger, “Suddenly something crunchy was in my mouth,” she continued, “and I spit it out.”

According to Devina Cordero, 20, after Ayala found the finger, she ran up to her and Cordero’s boyfriend and said, “Don’t eat it! Look, there’s a human finger in our chili.”

“We went up to the counter and they told us it was a vegetable,” Cordero continued. “The people from Wendy’s were poking it with a spoon.”

The restaurant is located at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez drove his car up to the drive-thru menu and found that chili was still on the menu, at a price of US$1.19 for a small serving. He also witnessed workers unloading supplies from a semi-trailer truck in the restaurant’s parking lot, and carting them into the back door of the establishment.

According to Ben Gale, director of environmental health for Santa Clara County, the finger did not come from any of the employees at the restaurant. “We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers and everything is OK there,” he said. The found portion of the finger likely belonged to a woman because of its long and manicured fingernail, also found in the food.

Officials seized the food supply at the restaurant and are tracing it back to the manufacturer, where they believe the finger may have gotten mixed in with the raw ingredients used to prepare the chili. The restaurant’s operators were later permitted to re-open after preparing new chili prepared from fresh ingredients.

As this story was filed, there was no mention of the incident on the Wendy’s corporate web site. Wendy’s issued a statement through a spokesman.

“Food safety is of utmost importance to us,” said Wendy’s spokesman Joe Desmond. He referred to the incident as an “unsubstantiated claim.”

“We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It’s important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy’s we plan to do right by our customers,” Desmond said.

According to county health officials, the unfortunate woman who bit into the finger is doing fine, despite her initial reaction. Officials also noted that the finger would have been cooked at a high enough temperature to destroy any viruses.

The Santa Clara county medical examiner reported that the finger had a solid fingerprint, although investigators did not say if a search of fingerprint databases would be performed to find the owner of the finger.

How To Find Low Airfare On Delta Airlines

By Lisa Steinway

Delta Airlines is one of the original commercial airlines in North America, and one of the largest. They fly to more than 340 destinations in sixty countries on six continents. No matter where you want to go, Delta Airlines can get you there. They have partnered with regional airlines to increase coverage, and with other international airlines. Delta Airlines have also kept up with the times. More than 3000 daily flights in the US are equipped with Wi-Fi, and they have apps for mobile devices that allow customers to book flights, check in, and view schedules and delays. The app also allows tracking your checked bag’s location.

Like many airlines, Delta Airlines has a loyalty program. Flyers earn points each time they fly, on Delta Airlines or Delta partners. These points can be redeemed for future travel. Delta Airlines also has lounges in some airports. These lounges offer free drinks and snacks, a quiet place to relax on long layovers, Wi-Fi, magazines and newspapers and even showers at some locations. Delta Airlines posts web-only specials on their website or you can sign up for an e-news that will let you now when seat sales are coming up.

The best place to find great fares on Delta Airlines is discount travel sites. These sites will show fares from all airlines, so you can compare. You will also be able to choose time of departure and arrival, so that you can find a schedule that works for you. Discount travel sites can combine airlines to offer the flights that you want. These sites also will offer non-stop and connecting flights; you might find that you are flying out on one airline, and connecting to another to get you to your destination on your schedule.

Be flexible when you are booking a flight. Take into consideration the days of the week. Most flights are less expensive mid-week. If you can travel on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, you will pay less than if you are flying out Friday night and back on Sunday evening or Monday morning. Time of year is also a factor to consider when booking a holiday. If you are going to a tourist destination, try going at an off-peak time, or shoulder season. Fares drop after the seasonal rush, and you will find that accommodations, restaurants, and attractions will be less hectic as well. If you are booking at holiday times or March Break, book as early as possible though. Low fares sell out quickly for those occasions, and you’re better to snap up that low fare early.

Many discount travel sites send out regular notices of fare changes when you have registered your desired location with them. This is a great way to monitor fares, and book when a fare is announced that fits your budget. As long as your dates are not fixed, you can get great deals this way. Discount travel sites depend on your repeat business, so get to know a couple, and learn which one you can count on.

Explosion after gas leakage in Madrid residential building kills four

Saturday, January 23, 2021

On Wednesday, at least four people killed by an explosion at a residential building located in Central Madrid, Spain.

Eyewitnesses reported a strong smell of gas shortly before the blast. The building was owned by a Roman Catholic Church and was destroyed by the blast. Among the dead was an electrician who was present to inspect the building’s boilers.

It was like an earthquake; I thought a bomb had gone off.

At least ten others were injured as a result of the incident. According to the reports, strong gas smell had first been detected at around 2pm local time, so an electrician David Santos Muñoz had been called out to inspect the boilers. Minutes after this, at 2:56 pm, the building exploded, killing him and at least three others. An owner of a nearby bar told El País “It was as if a bomb had dropped, the noise was tremendous”. An eyewitness also told the newspaper “it was like an earthquake; I thought a bomb had gone off.”

A school and nursing home were nearby to the blast, the latter of which had suffered minor damage according to the city’s mayor José Luis Martínez-Almeida. Nobody was injured in either of these and TVE said that the school has been said to have been empty at the time due to closures after significant snowfall in the capital. Police said the nursing home was safely evacuated following the blast.

Horse flu spreads in Australia

Monday, August 27, 2007

The number of horses confirmed to be infected with Equine Influenza in Australia has risen to 47, all in the state of New South Wales. So far none of those confirmed infected have been thoroughbred race horses.

The NSW government has confirmed infections at the federal government’s quarantine facility at Eastern Creek and Centennial Park in Sydney; at Cattai and Wilberforce in North-Western Sydney; and in Moonbi, Parkes, Berry and Wyong in regional NSW.

It is also feared that the outbreak may have spread to Warwick in Queensland where three horses from NSW showed flu-like symptoms during an equestrian event. Initial samples were tested in a laboratory in Brisbane revealing the three animals had been carrying the flu. Further testing will be conducted on samples from the horses in Victoria, although results are not expected until later this week. All 300 horses at the event have been quarantined.

There are also three suspected cases of the virus infecting thoroughbreds at Randwich racecourse in Sydney, if the horses test positive to the flu they will be the first thoroughbreds to be infected with the virus.

The Federal Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran told ABC Radio this morning that while the source of the outbreak was not known, it is likely that the outbreak may have been caused by an equestrian event held in Maitland on the 18th and 19th of August.

“Everyone’s been assuming it was the Centennial Park horses that travelled and infected horses in different parts of regional NSW,” he said.

“It would appear at this stage that almost all, if not every horse affected has passed through a Maitland horse event on the weekend of the 18th and 19th, or come in contact with a Maitland horse.”

Agriculture Minister of NSW, Ian Macdonald told reporters “It’s early days yet, but a number of horses that attended an event at the property on that weekend are showing clinical signs of equine influenza”.

“The NSW Chief Vet, Bruce Christie, has advised me that we need to locate and examine every single horse that entered and left the property.”

At this stage it appears the Australia wide ban on horse movements which expires on Wednesday may have to be extended, at least in NSW and Queensland.

Tomatoes, watermelons, peppers reduce stroke risk, Finnish study suggests

Tuesday, October 9, 2012

A Finnish study has indicated that having higher body levels of lycopene — a red chemical occurring in tomatoes, watermelons, grapefruit, peppers, and papaya — may reduce the risk of stroke. The research for the study, which is in the issue of medical journal Neurology released today, examined 1,031 men aged between 42 and 61 over a period of twelve years on average.

The study, which was financed by the Lapland Central Hospital, found that the men with higher amounts of lycopene in their blood system experienced fewer strokes than men with lower levels. Eleven strokes occurred amongst the 259 men in the highest of the four lycopene level categories while 25 of the 258 men in the categories with the lowest lycopene level categories experienced strokes. This suggests a stroke was 55% less likely if one had a high amount of the chemical in one’s diet than if one had a low amount.

“The results support the recommendation that people get more than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day,” said Dr Jouni Karppi of the Department of Medicine at the University of Eastern Finland. Eating these types of foods in such quantities “would likely lead to a major reduction in the number of strokes worldwide, according to previous research”, the primary author of the study continued. He added that inflammation and blood clotting — the cause of ischemic strokes, the most common type of stroke — occurred less frequently.

In the US state of New York, Lenox Hill Hospital Center for Stroke and Neuro-Endovascular Surgery director Dr. Rafael Ortiz said that, alongside exercise and non-smoking, “diet is very important” for reducing the likelihood of stroke. However, these results “should not deter people from eating other types of fruit and vegetables as they all have health benefits and remain an important part of a staple diet”, according to Dr Clare Walton of The Stroke Association in the UK.

The results came as part of a wider study on cardiovascular disease development risks. The United States Department of Agriculture also registers high concentrations of lycopene in tomato purées, pastes and sauces. All those surveyed lived in, or in close proximity to, the Finnish town of Kuopio, where the University of Eastern Finland is located.

Former WorldCom chief found guilty of all charges

Tuesday, March 15, 2005A federal jury found Bernard Ebbers guilty on all nine counts in an indictment for fraud, conspiracy and false regulatory filings. The verdict was handed down by a New York jury after 8 days of deliberation on the former WorldCom CEO and mastermind behind the accounting scandal that brought down the telcom giant.

AP writer Erin McClam reported that when the verdict was announced, “Ebbers’ face reddened.”

Sentencing is set for the second Tuesday of next week when he could receive 85 years in prison for the conviction.

Ebbers who took the stand in his own defence, said he left the details of the company’s accounting to others and that he had no knowledge of shady practices. But Scott Sullivan, the ex-chief financial officer of the company and key prosecution witness, directly linked Ebbers to the fraud. Sullivan agreed to co-operate with prosecutors in the hopes of receiving a lenient sentence for his own involvement in the scandal.

The fall of WordCom sparked a massive class action law suit by investors. The plunge in WorldCom’s stock changed the capitalized value of the company in the range of $11 billion as the scandal unravelled. Secuities fraud cases stemming from the suits will probably break new legal ground where the involvement of investment banks and public accounting firms who would normally check company irregularities will be called into legal question.
