FOX News previews Grafton Street restaurant and “voice collector” in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts

Sunday, May 1, 2005

The FOX Morning News broadcast from Harvard Square this morning in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Anchors Liz Carrigan and Gene Lavanchy profiled a restaurant and a musician who will take part in the 22nd annual Mayfair, which starts on Sunday, May 1. The restaurant, Grafton Street, is on Massachusetts Avenue.

The Mayfair is a festival that takes place in Harvard Square on an annual basis. On Sunday, the Square will be closed from noon until 6 pm to vehicular traffic; according to the Mayfair website, “200 artists and merchants” will participate in the event this year.

The musician, Halsey Burgund, works for a computer security firm, but plays the drums and piano in his spare time. This morning, he had set up his portable recording booth to demonstrate the means by which he records passersby for voice samples in his music. Burgund will have his booth set up on Sunday and hopes to record festival visitors. Eventually, Burgund hopes to release his music under a Creative Commons license. Burgund noted that he previously tried recording people on the street with just a microphone, but he found that there was too much ambient noise for the quality of recording he desired.

Auckland City Council acts to remove suspect chemicals in pre-school’s soil

Saturday, April 1, 2006

Chemicals, which the Auckland City Council said are a suspected cause of cancer and are considered toxic, have been found in soil at a children’s playcentre in Auckland. The contamination was found at the Auckland Central Playcentre in Freemans Bay, and the Council will now spend $100,000 removing the top 50 cm (about 20 in) of soil at the playcentre, doing landscaping and replacing playground equipment.

The presence of “polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, including benzo-a-pyrene,” was suspected at the school playground and was confirmed by a chemical analysis on Tuesday. The chemicals may cause temporary digestive and respiratory distress, as well as irritation of the eyes and skin. The levels of benzo-a-pyrene found were between 0.06 and 4.82 milligrams per kilogram of soil at surface level, according to the Ministry of Education. A potential risk is present at levels above 3.5 mg.

Bayern Munich set a new record for fewest goals conceded as Luca Toni finished as Bundesliga top scorer on the final day of the season in a 4-1 victory against Hertha BSC Berlin.

A series of farewells before kick-off brought the crowd to their feet in a string of standing ovations as Oliver Kahn, Bernd Dreher and Sepp Maier retired, Head Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld left to coach Switzerland and Jan Schlaudraff left for Hannover 96. Also leaving the club is Assistant Coach Michael Hanke. There was also a presentation for the match official, as referee Markus Merk also was on the Bundesliga stage for the last time before retirement.

Luca Toni’s 2 goals in the 1st Half and a Franck Ribery goal put the reigning champions 3-0 up at half-time, before Luca Toni completed his hat-trick in the 2nd Half. Substitute Valeri Domovchiyski scored the only goal for Hertha BSC Berlin.

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s final Bayern Munich team selection showed four changes to the side which beat Duisburg last week, with Philipp Lahm, Zé Roberto, Franck Ribéry and Luca Toni starting in place of Andreas Ottl, Jorse Ernesto Sosa, Jan Schlaudraff and Willy Sagnol.

Luca Toni’s 3 goals took him to 24 for the Bundesliga season and the “cannon-shaped trophy” awarded to the league’s leading scorer, while Bayern finished with just 21 goals against in 34 matches to beat Werder Bremen’s previous record of 22 from 1987-88.

Stolen minibus recovered 35 years after theft

Friday, November 6, 2009

A 1965 Volkswagen minibus that was stolen in 1974 has been recovered by customs agents in Los Angeles. The vintage minibus was in pristine condition, valued at $25,000, and was found during a routine inspection of a shipping container scheduled for departure to The Netherlands. A routine computer database search on its vehicle identification number flagged it as having been stolen from a vehicle upholstery shop in Spokane, Washington on July 12, 1974. A custom restoration business in Arizona was attempting to deliver it to overseas clients last month when authorities intercepted the vehicle.

“Pretty amazing, isn’t it?”

The theft appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau database, which is used by border authorities and contains all stolen vehicle records. Most police databases remove unsolved vehicle thefts after five years.

The California Highway Patrol does not suspect the restorer of wrongdoing, according to investigating officer Mike Maleta. Possession of the vehicle apparently changed several times. Police in Spokane have not yet located the rightful owner, whose identity has not been released to the press. Maleta hopes that a trail of registration documents and interviews will uncover the thief.

“[The restoration firm owner is] a victim himself. He was an innocent purchaser…”

The Allstate insurance company paid $2500 shortly after the theft occurred and wants to take possession of the vintage minibus. Allstate spokeswoman Megan Brunet expects that after the necessary paperwork is processed the firm will sell it at auction.

Egypt’s Shura Council parliament building on fire

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Fire broke out today at Egypt’s Shura Council, the upper house of the Parliament of Egypt at around 16:00 local time. The number of casualties had reached 13 by 22:30. Officials said that most of the casualties were a result of smoke inhalation and minor burns.

“The fire is currently limited to the Shura Council’s second floor. We are still trying to determine the exact cause of the fire,” the official said. “Parliament is currently on summer recess and very few people would have been in the building.”

As of this article’s publication, thick black clouds of smoke could still be seen billowing from the three-story building in downtown Cairo. A statement had been broadcast over a local TV network indicating that the evacuated employees said authorities told them they had ruled out terrorism and that the fire has been a result of a short circuit.

Fire engines and military helicopters reached the fire location and began trying to extinguish the flames. Ambulances were also seen in the area.

Parts of the ceiling on the top floor collapsed due to the fire.

The Egyptian Taxation building had also caught on fire.

Submitted by: Tom Ray

Milkshakes used to experience a poor history of having lots of sugar and calories. Nowadays it might be as healthy since the next broccolli and grilled salmon salad on top of your diet’s menu. The important thing is to select the ingredients quite carefully and make certain it rids with the fats and sugar that will simply ruin one’s diet. These ingredients vary according to what type of diet an individual has taken. Severe body builders and fitness buffs, as an example, take protein milk shakes after working out. Protein replenishes the muscles and tissues that got worn out during work out. Here is a straightforward procedure (and several tips) to prepare milkshakes with high protein content that can for the diet.

First, do not hesitate to invest time on choosing the components you want to put on your own milkshake. Once you’ve decided on the type of protein, flavor and what added nutrients want on your drink every thing else is going to be uncomplicated and just fall in position.

1)Your objective. Are you currently trying to gain weight? Shed weight? Develop increase body mass? Ensure you know what your fitness objective is mainly because it’s crucial in picking ingredients.

2)Pick your sort of protein. Pure whey protein is the easiest to obtain absorbed however , many people like making use of soy protein. Whichever it’s you decide on, powder protein really should be included in your shake. Protein shakes have different flavors so pick 1 that will match one other ingredients you chose specially if it has fruits within it.

3)Picking milk. A lactose intolerant individual should not drink milk however it doesn’t mean they cannot drink milk shakes. The 1st alternative is soy milk but you may also use almond or rice milk. Moreover, it is possible to use skim milk if you’re watching unwanted weight or whole if you are trying to achieve some.

4)Pick your fruit and flavor. Most protein powder already have flavors but mixing it using the proper fruits along with other ingredients makes it not only taste much better but even much more healthier. Most fitness buffs use banana as a base due to the fact, not just is it very lower in fat, it really is also a great source of protein and potassium. They can also opt for lots of other flavors like vanilla, vanilla ice cream, chocolate and also peanut butter. Some body builders use peanut butter inside their shakes as it is also a good source of protein.

5)Other healthy ingredients. Most severe body builders also put eggwhites in their shakes. 4-6 egg-whites in your usual banana and low fat vanilla ice cream milkshake is great according to your target body mass. Naturally, egg-whites in milkshakes won’t taste excellent so other sweetening inredients like maple syrup, butterscotch, caramel, honey and chocolate syrup are recommended but be certain you utilize these moderately simply because they contain loads of calories. They are quite low in fat though.

6)Pick other nutrients to choose it. You are able to add other nutritional vitamin supplements and energy boosters too like l-carnitine and even caffeine.

7)Just mix your ingredients with ice cubes unless you reach the desired taste/flavor and you are excellent to look.

Keep in mind these milkshakes are used as supplements and never replacements so taking it in replacing 1 meal isn’t advisable.

Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis

Friday, December 14, 2007

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic condition causing benign tumors (neurofibromas) to grow along certain types of nerves and, in addition, it can affect the development of bones or skin. There are several variants of the disease but type 1 and type 2 NF account for the vast majority of cases.

The disease manifestations can vary from very mild to severe. Major symptoms include growths on and under the skin; skin pigmentations called café au lait spots in type 1; acoustic nerve tumors and consequent hearing loss in type 2. Growths can affect nearly all parts of the body, and pressure on nearby structures can cause a wide variety of complications. There is a small risk that the tumors transform into malignant cancerous lesions.

NF is one of the most common single-gene human diseases; around 1 in 2,500-4,000 live births are affected by NF-1, whereas NF-2 occurs in about 1 in 50,000-120,000. Both type 1 and 2 are autosomal dominant conditions, meaning that only one copy of the mutated gene need be inherited to pass the disorder. A child of a parent with neurofibromatosis and an unaffected parent will have a 50% chance of inheriting the disorder. The gene responsible for NF-1 and possibly NF-2 is thought to function as a tumor suppressor gene.

In most cases of neurofibromatosis 1, patients can live normal and productive lives. In about 25-40% of patients there is an associated learning disability with or without ADHD. In some cases of neurofibromatosis 2, the damage to nearby vital structures, such as the cranial nerves and the brainstem, can be life-threatening. When tumors are causing pain or disfiguration, surgery is thus far the only proven beneficial treatment option.

Reggie Bibbs is a 43-year-old-man living in Houston, Texas. Mr Bibbs was born with a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis (NF), which causes him to develop tumors on his body (see infobox on the right). NF can be a subtle disease, but in Bibbs’ case it has left him with a disfigured face and deformed leg. But he is happy with the way he looks, and doesn’t want to change his appearance to please other people. He has launched a successful campaign entitled “Just Ask”, and that’s just what Wikinews did in a video-interview.

The interview was prepared by Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent with the help of Bertalan Meskó (who has a popular genetics and web 2.0 blog). Their questions were sent to a close friend of Mr. Bibbs, Lou Congelio, who kindly conducted the interview.
