How to Create the Perfect Deck Plan

by

Richard Vande SompelHave the family come together to discuss various ideas of what a perfect deck plan might be for everyone. Walk around the property and consider various locations for the deck. Backyards are often the popular choice but the side or even front yard may be a better choice to suit the needs of the family.Determine the potential size of the deck. Where a larger deck might cut into the yard area, a smaller deck might be the better slection. However, if the yard is rarely used or lawn maintenance is a negative issue, then a larger deck will make life easier.Consider what things are typically done by family members outdoors. Determine how the construction of a deck might make them more enjoyable. Brainstorm ideas of new ways to enjoy outdoor living as well. Cooking outdoors is the most popular deck activity for the majority of people. Locate the grilling area as far away as possible from areas where children playing might pose a safety issue. Leave enough room for the chef and assitant cooks to gather around the barbecue to chat and burn meat together. It might be worthwhile to construct a complete cooking center with a small refrigerator, counter space and even cabinets. In cases where rain might affect the ritual of cooking outdoors, think about erecting an overhead shelter of some sort.In the planning of a deck it is important to consider the placement and arrangement of outdoor furniture. An area could be set aside specifically for dining with a large table and chairs. A wide open deck might be preferred that would offer several strategically located areas that would encourage small groups of people to come together for buffet style dining and tasting wines.Consider sticking with movable furniture instead of built-in benches and tables. Guests and family members are likely to prefer arranging their own seating and eating spaces.Eating and entertaining on the deck after dark are considerations that make deck lighting an important issue. Motion sensing floodlights are great for providing security or lighting the way for home entry. However, it is extremely unappealing for outdoor dining ambiance. Low voltage lighting fixtures set into steps or posts provide a much more effective and subtle solution. Outdoor holiday lights or Japanese lanterns strung up on or around the deck strategically can do much to create a festive feeling or mood. The movement of the sun during daytime hours will impact upon the location of the deck. Main entertaining areas will have to be kept away from the heat and the glare of the afternoon and setting sun. Attention will have to be paid to choosing the best places to sip a drink at night, read the newspaper early in the morning, work on a tan or enjoy an afternoon nap. Such decisions will affect the placement of overhead structures such as arbors and pergolas as well as hammocks and swinging chairs. Privacy can be an important deck design issue. The size of the deck will partly determine the approach to be used. Low railings and benches or none at all open up a deck to the yard. Railings with closely spaced balusters, privacy screens and overhead structures can be used to provide a sense of enclosure. Building a raised deck might put the family on display for all the neighborhood to see. However, by stepping the deck down, this problem will disappear. The alternative would be to construct a higher deck with fence-like structures bordering it. A strategically placed trellis can easily support attractive climbing and flowering plants that will work with the deck’s railing system to provide all the privacy that is needed.Constructing a multilevel deck is another alternative that will create areas that are separated but not walled off. In the process family members and guests can experience various measures of privacy. The wraparound deck is another excellent choice to create a sense of privacy. Because of its design nature, one area will be separated from the other simply because each one is adjacent to a different side of the house. One of the easiest methods to create privacy on a deck is by means of the strategic placement of plants around its perimeter. As bushes, shrubs and trees grow over the years, the snese of privacy and enclosure will heighten. Hedges can easily be planted in order to replace railings and achieve the same effects.Orienting the deck in order to enjoy the best features within the yard is an extremely important decision. Where possible, plan and design the landscaping to complement the deck and enhance the total experience. The location of flowers, shrubs, climbing vines and trees are part of this. However, items such as bird feeders, trellises, fountains or other water features can enhance the measure of enjoyment immensely. Creating the perfect deck plan should involve everyone in the family in some way and should reflect the lifestyle, tastes and desires of all concerned. In that way this new outdoor space will easily provide years of enjoyment for the whole family, guests and quite possibly any future owners.

Woman finds human finger in bowl of chili at Wendy’s restaurant

Thursday, March 24, 2005

San Jose, California — A woman eating a bowl of chili at a Wendy’s restaurant bit into a chewy bit that turned out to be a human finger. She immediately spat it out, warned other patrons to stop eating, and upon recognizing the object as a finger, vomited.

“I’m more of a Carl’s Jr. person,” the 39-year-old Las Vegas woman, Anna Ayala, told Knight Ridder. She said this incident was her first visit to a Wendy’s restaurant. Ayala described how she found the finger, “Suddenly something crunchy was in my mouth,” she continued, “and I spit it out.”

According to Devina Cordero, 20, after Ayala found the finger, she ran up to her and Cordero’s boyfriend and said, “Don’t eat it! Look, there’s a human finger in our chili.”

“We went up to the counter and they told us it was a vegetable,” Cordero continued. “The people from Wendy’s were poking it with a spoon.”

The restaurant is located at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez drove his car up to the drive-thru menu and found that chili was still on the menu, at a price of US$1.19 for a small serving. He also witnessed workers unloading supplies from a semi-trailer truck in the restaurant’s parking lot, and carting them into the back door of the establishment.

According to Ben Gale, director of environmental health for Santa Clara County, the finger did not come from any of the employees at the restaurant. “We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers and everything is OK there,” he said. The found portion of the finger likely belonged to a woman because of its long and manicured fingernail, also found in the food.

Officials seized the food supply at the restaurant and are tracing it back to the manufacturer, where they believe the finger may have gotten mixed in with the raw ingredients used to prepare the chili. The restaurant’s operators were later permitted to re-open after preparing new chili prepared from fresh ingredients.

As this story was filed, there was no mention of the incident on the Wendy’s corporate web site. Wendy’s issued a statement through a spokesman.

“Food safety is of utmost importance to us,” said Wendy’s spokesman Joe Desmond. He referred to the incident as an “unsubstantiated claim.”

“We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It’s important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy’s we plan to do right by our customers,” Desmond said.

According to county health officials, the unfortunate woman who bit into the finger is doing fine, despite her initial reaction. Officials also noted that the finger would have been cooked at a high enough temperature to destroy any viruses.

The Santa Clara county medical examiner reported that the finger had a solid fingerprint, although investigators did not say if a search of fingerprint databases would be performed to find the owner of the finger.

Understanding Python Basics

by

Infocampus

you get a chance to learn some Python basics, such as using the print function to display output. You will read about using variables and how to assign values to variables, and you will gain an understanding of their data types. By the end of the hour, you will know how to get data into a script by using the input function and write your first Python script!

Producing Python Script Output

Understanding how to produce output from a Python script is a good starting point for those who are new to the Python programming language. You get instant feedback on your Python statements from the Python interactive interpreter and can experiment with proper syntax. The print function, which you met in Hour 3, Setting Up a Programming Environment, is a good place to focus your attention at Infocampus

Exploring the print Function

A function is a group of Python statements that are put together as a unit to perform a specific task.

The print functions task is to output items. The items to output are correctly called an argument.

The argument portion of the print function can be characters, such as ABC or 123. It also can be values stored in variables.

Using Characters as print Function Arguments

To display characters (also called string literals) using the print function, you need to enclose the characters in either a set of single quotes or double quotes. Listing 4.1 shows using a pair of single quotes to enclose characters (a sentence) so it can be used as a print function argument.

Try It Yourself: Create Output with the print Function

This hour you have been reading about creating and formatting output by using the print function. Now it is your turn to try this versatile Python tool. Follow these steps:

1.If you have not already done so, power up your Raspberry Pi and log in to the system.

2.If you do not have the GUI started automatically at boot, start it now by typing startx and pressing Enter.

3.Open a terminal by double-clicking the Terminal icon.

4.At the command-line prompt, type python3 and press Enter. You are taken to the Python interactive shell, where you can type Python statements and see immediate results.

5.At the Python interactive shell prompt (>>>), type print(‘I learned about the print function.’) and press Enter.

6.At the prompt, type print(‘I learned about single quotes.’) and press Enter.

7.At the prompt, type print(“Double quotes can also be used.”) and press Enter.

By the Way: Multiple Lines with Triple Double Quotes

In steps 810, you will not be completing the print function on one line. Instead, you will be using triple double quotes to enable multiple lines to be entered and displayed.

8.At the prompt, type print(“””I learned about things like… and press Enter.

9.Type triple quotes, and press Enter.

10.Type and displaying text on multiple lines.”””) and press Enter. Notice that the Python interactive shell did not output the Python print statements argument until you had fully completed it with the closing parenthesis.

11.At the prompt, type print(‘Single quotes protect “double quotes” in output.’) and press Enter.

12.At the prompt, type print(“Double quotes protect ‘single quotes’ in output.”) and press Enter.

13.At the prompt, type print(“A backslash protects \”double quotes\” in output.”) and press Enter.

14.At the prompt, type print(‘A backslash protects \’single quotes\’ in output.’) and press Enter. Using the backslash to protect either single or double quotes enables you to maintain your chosen method of consistently using single (or double) quotes around your print function argument.

15.At the prompt, type print(“The backslash character \\ is an escape character.”) and press Enter.

16.At the prompt, type print(“Use escape sequences to \n insert a linefeed.”) and press Enter. In the output, notice how part of the sentence, Use escape sequences to, is on one line and the end of the sentence, insert a linefeed., is on another line. This is due to your insertion of the escape sequence \n in the middle of the sentence.

17.At the prompt, type print(“Use escape sequences to \t\t insert two tabs or” and press Enter.

18.At the . . . prompt, type “insert a check mark: \u2714”) and press Enter.

You can do a lot with the print function to display and format output! In fact, you could spend this entire hour just playing with output formatting. However, there are additional important Python basics you need to learn, such as formatting scripts for readability.

Additional damage to reservoir prompts evacuation of Kolontar, Hungary

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Kolontar, Hungary is currently being evacuated as new damage was discovered at the burst reservoir that spilled hazardous sludge on Monday 04 October 2010 in Western Hungary. If the embankment dam of the storage pond that already released about 700,000 cubic meters of highly alkaline (pH ~13) red sludge into the area would entirely collapse, an extra volume of 500,000 cubic meters of red mud could be released.

A second spill containing more sediments from the bottom of the reservoir would be heavier and thicker than the first one, and would move less rapidly. The flash flood of Monday already killed seven people, chemically burnt 150 others, and left the land and the surface water devastated by the sodium hydroxide and the iron oxides bearing also traces of heavy metals. According to Reuters the prime minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, arrived in the village Saturday morning.

It is also being reported that the newly discovered damage is minor; however, disaster crews do not want to take any chances and are evacuating the village’s 800 inhabitants as a precaution. The evacuees are being taken to a sports hall and two high schools, which are eight kilometers away from the reservoir in a town called Ajka.

Fire breaks out in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, Australia

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Fire broke out in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, on the outskirts of Sydney, Australia, at approximately 5pm on Sunday 21st January 2007. The site of the fire is inaccessible terrain in the Bobbin Head/Apple Tree Bay area.

For a time properties were threatened in Mount Ku-ring-gai, but this danger has now passed. The F3 freeway and northern train line were closed, causing freeway traffic to be banked up. The morning saw delayed traffic on the F3, which was briefly opened, but for the most part traffic was diverted onto the Pacific Highway at the Berowra Exit.

Around midday the F3 Freeway and Pacific Highway were closed until further notice, severing Sydney’s northern vehicular links. During Monday afternoon the railway line was closed. Traffic for the north was being routed inland via Wisemans Ferry Road, though Windsor. The Pacific Highway, F3 and railway line reopened at 6pm. Welfare centres have been opened for commuters who cannot get home. They are located at Berowra Community Centre (north of the fire) and Thornleigh Baptist Community Centre (south of the fire).

Overnight backburning along with a direct attack has seen the main threat dissipate with the southern fire front under control. On Monday morning spot fires continue to move north towards Cowan Creek. The wind has been picking up in the local area during Monday afternoon. The fire is proving difficult to contain due to spot fires and flying embers.

There has continuous helicopter activity over the area during Monday.

The NSW Rural Fire Service will be holding Community briefings at the Berowra Oval and Samuel King Park Bobbin Head Road Turramurra at 5.30pm today (Monday).

Tuesday saw continuing helicopter activity. Steady rain has been falling throughout Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. The Rural fire service has stated that it is now confident that the fire will be contained.

Two American soldiers charged in Iraqi murders

Saturday, June 30, 2007

On Saturday, the US military announced the arrests of two American soldiers alleged to have been involved in three separate premeditated murders of Iraqi civilians, and the planting of weapons around the crime scene to pretend the victims were insurgents.

The incidents occurred over the past two months in Iskandariyah, 50 kilometres south of Baghdad. The investigation began when fellow soldiers in the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment reported the alleged events to their superiors.

Spc. Jorge G. Sandoval, 22, was arrested Tuesday while on a 2-week leave at his family’s home in Laredo, Texas and charged with one count of premeditated murder and one count of placing a weapon on the victim.

Staff Sgt. Michael A. Hensley, who comes from Candler, North Carolina, was arrested at a military base in Kuwait on Thursday and charged with three counts of premeditated murder, three counts of obstruction of justice and three counts of placing weapons around the victims.

CN Health & Safety Plan planned to be cancelled

Monday, August 29, 2005

On July 18, 2005 CN Rail notified the CAW that they intend to cancel the CN-CAW previously Negotiated Health & Safety Plan. The CAW will be going to arbitration this fall to address the issue. The CAW has asked that employees notify their Health and Safety Rep about any safety concerns at the work place.

One terminal has lost 5-6 full-time positions. CN Rail used to have part-time positions filled as well, but at this time there are no part-time employees to cover work if a full-time employee is absent. Overtime is necessary to keep the trains running on time. Intermodal traffic goes up, but staff goes down. CN Rail expects the trains to go out on time, and in a safe condition, but staff is overworked, because there are not enough of them. In fact, one worker noticed that most of the rail cars that contained 40 foot overseas containers did not have their loading guides in place. Trains are not allowed to go out without these guides placed into the cars (the guides stop the loads from swaying from side to side in the cars), important for safety with double stacked containers, but it seems that in this case the lack of employees forced the train to leave without them.

Some recent derailments have come to the attention of the media and politicians.

On August 3rd 2005 there was a derailment in Wabamun Lake Alberta that spilled toxins into the lake. 2 days later there was a derailment in Cheakamus River near Squamish BC. Both derailments spilled hazardous materials into the water. Many are saying that CN took too long to notify people of the toxic spills.

The Conductor on each train carries with him the shipping manifest with him and has access to that information at all times. Almost any CN terminal that has a clerk working at it with access to the CN Intranet can get this information within minutes.

CTV news has said that this is the 5th derailment for CN this month.

Doctor robbed, car-jacked and locked in boot while car set alight

Monday, March 19, 2007

A 34 year old obstetrician from Forestville on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has escaped after he was robbed, car-jacked and locked in the boot (trunk) of his BMW, which was set alight. Police say the doctor was locked in the boot while his car was set alight, but was allowed to escape before flames engulfed the vehicle.

The Doctor was believed to have been heading to The Mater Hospital in North Sydney when he was waiting at the intersection of West and Falcon Streets in Chatswood around 3:15AM AEDT when a small red sedan with two men claiming to be police officers signalled him to stop. After crossing the intersection, the doctor stopped his car at the side of the road.

The doctor was then approached by the two men and when he asked to see identification, one man grabbed the keys from his car’s ignition before they both pulled the doctor out of his vehicle, hit him in the stomach with a hammer and stole his mobile phone and wallet. The robbers also demanded his key and credit cards along with their access codes before locking him in the boot.

Police allege that the men drove to several locations to withdraw cash and buy things before driving to Carisbook Street in Linley Point at around 4 a.m. local time where they set the car alight with the doctor still in the boot.

Crime Manager of the Harbourside Local Area Command, Detective Inspector Houlahan said that the doctor then “heard a click in the boot area and he heard someone call out: ‘Get out of the car'”

“When he pushed the boot up he found his car engulfed in flames.”

Det. Insp. Houlahan said the doctor told police he did not unlock the boot himself, and it appeared the man’s captors unlocked it before fleeing.

Det Insp Houlahan said that the doctor appeared to be “very distraught” and tired after the ordeal, and wanted to get home and see his wife and two young daughters.

He could only provide police with a vague description of his captors, but said the men were both Caucasian males aged in their 20s, and that one of them was about six feet tall (183cm) with short blond hair and medium build said Det. Insp. Houlahan.
