Four dead, at least 15 injured after gunman opens fire at fitness center in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Four people have been shot and killed and at least 15 wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a LA Fitness center in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. The gunman was among the dead.

Reports say the man walked into a dance room where an all-female Latin dance class was in session, turned off the lights and began to shoot people. CNN reports that the gunman was a “middle-aged white male.” One witness said he was carrying a duffel bag, which he put down before shooting into the crowd. After opening fire, he turned the gun on himself. At least 30 people are reported to have been in the room at the time of the shooting.

Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said, “I’ve never seen nothing quite like this. It was very chaotic. […] There’s a good belief that the shooter is deceased.”

Collier Township Police Chief Tom Devin stated that the police, “believe the shooter committed suicide at the scene but we’re not positive.” Police report that the shooter’s motive may have been a domestic dispute with one of the exercisers.

Mike Hentosz, a witness who was inside the gym, said, “I feel like it’s a dream. I don’t know what to think of it.” A woman participating in the class, Nicole, said that 10 minutes into the class, “a middle-aged white male walked into the class. He had a big gym bag. […] He looked out of place in a class full of women.” When he began firing, she reported, she ran out of the gym and escaped in passerby’s car.

Car maker DeLorean dies at 80

Monday, March 21, 2005

Automobile industry pioneer, John DeLorean, died Saturday in a New Jersey hospital by complications from a stroke.

DeLorean was born in 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to European immigrant parents. He received an education in automotive engineering and quickly rose through the ranks of Packard and later General Motors (GM). DeLorean was credited with the development of the Pontiac GTO, which helped introduce the era of “muscle cars”. By 1965, DeLorean led the entire Pontiac division, and four years later was promoted to the prestigious position of leading GM’s Chevrolet.

In 1973, DeLorean quit General Motors and started his own company, the De Lorean Motor Company. The company’s product was the DMC-12, an unusual car featuring an unpainted, stainless-steel exterior and gull-wing doors. The company started production in 1981 but failed less than two years later, having produced under 9,000 vehicles. Despite the company’s failure and the car’s dismal sales, the car itself gained a cult following after the release of the 1985 movie Back to the Future which featured the car as a time-travel machine.

DeLorean himself was in nearly as much trouble as his company. In 1982 he was arrested for attempting to sell $24 million worth of cocaine to undercover police, and after his company’s failure, he became involved in a multitude of lawsuits alleging investor fraud. Though DeLorean successfully resolved the cocaine case after claiming entrapment, his other legal cases would drag on until 1999, when he declared bankruptcy.

Self Certification Mortgage Applications Rise

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Michael Sterios

The attractiveness of self-certification mortgage products is boosting the overall number of home loan applications in the UK. For true self-cert products, the applicant does not need to fully prove their income by way of documentary evidence such as pay slips and tax records. Rather, applicants will make a declaration of income to the lender based on their past earnings and expected future income.

Self-certification mortgage products are growing in popularity as more people receive income in variable patterns and through non-standard forms such as bonuses and commissions. Originally self-cert home loans were designed for the self-employed. The changing composition of the workforces has, however, meant that many employees cannot fully prove their employment income as well.

Not having to fully prove income is believed by some analysts to increase the risk of over borrowing and therefore repossession. However, provided the applicant does not exaggerate their income on their mortgage application, they should only be approved to borrow the maximum amount they can afford to repay in accordance with the lenders’ criteria.

Additionally, lying about income on any home loan application is a criminal offense meaning there are severe consequences if a fraudster is caught by the authorities. These days more and more lenders are challenging applicants’ income declarations, reducing the likelihood of borrowing putting themselves at financial risk and catching criminals in the process.

Interest rates are usually higher on self-certification mortgage products than for standard mortgage products and loan-to-values can also be lower. This means the borrower will have to fund a larger deposit thereby increasing their initial investment in their own home. This is due to the fact that lenders believe self-cert applicants represent a higher risk to them than standard applicants.

This can act as an extra incentive for applicants to not lie about their income and over borrow on their mortgage. If the borrower has their own money at risk because of the larger deposit they were required to contribute they are more likely to not over borrow and increase the risk of repossession. If they are repossessed they will most likely not recover their deposit funds as the property will no doubt be sold at a discount by the lender at auction.

As the composition of the workforce shifts from more people becoming self-employed, self-certification mortgage products should continue to rise in popularity. It is estimated that a quarter of the UK’s population are already self-employed and therefore have trouble proving their income, and this figure is growing. Mortgage lenders have recognised this which is why self-cert home loan products are so widely available on today’s mortgage market. Demand for self-certs should continue into the future and as a result the products should become more competitive.

If you require a self-certification mortgage you should contact an independent mortgage adviser for expert, impartial advice. An independent broker will be able to advise you on the entire home loan market and can utilise software that can help pinpoint the right product to suit your personal situation. Mortgage brokers usually charge a fee, however the payback could be worth it.

Man charged with attempted murder in £40 million London jewel heist

Sunday, September 6, 2009

24-year-old Aman Kassaye, of no fixed abode, is to face a charge of attempted murder for his alleged role in an armed robbery that netted £40 million ($65 million) worth of jewelry from a London store.

Kassaye is the seventh man to be charged, and is also facing prosecution for conspiracy to rob the Graff store in New Bond Street, false imprisonment, and using a handgun to resist arrest. He will appear at Wimbledon magistrates court on Monday.

The other six men have already been remanded in custody until October 23, when they will appear at Kingston Crown Court. All are facing charges of conspiracy to rob, and two of them are also charged with a firearms offense.

43 diamond rings, watches, and bracelets were taken from the store. The theft occurred when two armed and suited men walked in and took an employee hostage. It has been reported they used prosthetic masks made from liquid latex but police have not confirmed this. Amateur footage also shows a shot was fired. No-one was injured.

The robbery is one of the biggest the United Kingdom has seen. After the crime a string of getaway vehicles was used, with police believing several more offenders assisted with this stage of the plan. Although The Telegraph claims no stolen property has yet been recovered, this is also unconfirmed by police.

Fiat plans to buy majority stake in Chrysler

Sunday, May 29, 2011

Fiat announced on Friday that it intends to purchase the six percent of automaker Chrysler that the US government currently owns, which would give the Italian company a 52 percent majority stake in Chrysler.

According to Fiat’s announcement, the company has told the US Treasury that it intends to use its option to buy the share in Chrysler held by the US government, a deal that will be finalized by June 10. If a price is not agreed on by that time, Fiat will pay the average of the estimates of two investment banks.

In 2009, Fiat bought a twenty percent stake in Chrysler, which had just exited bankruptcy, and has since increased its holding to 46 percent, expected to increase to 57% by the end of this year.

According to analyst Maryann Keller, the deal is a good one for both companies, as “[n]either one has the ability to compete alone in the kind of global environment that they face.” Analyst Rebecca Lindland said that the move will also benefit the companies by getting “them out from underneath any hint of government ownership and any of that negativity that went along with the bailout.”

On Wednesday, Catalonia-based football club FC Barcelona defeated Seville-based football club Sevilla 5–4 to win the 2015 UEFA Super Cup.
