Fischer suffers seizure, collapses during Red Wings game

Tuesday, November 22, 2005

Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jiri Fischer was hospitalized Monday night after suffering a seizure while on the bench during an ice hockey game in Detroit. He is listed in stable condition.

Late in the first period in a game against the Nashville Predators at Joe Louis Arena, Fischer collapsed on the bench. According to Red Wing coach Mike Babcock, Fischer suffered a seizure, and went into cardiac arrest. He was revived by team medical staff, who used a defibrillator to restart Fischer’s heart. He was taken by ambulance to Detroit Receiving Hospital. Fox Sports Detroit reported that he was awake and talking to hospital staff.

As of Monday night, Fischer’s condition was listed as stable.

In September 2002, Fischer had an abnormal electrocardiogram reading, forcing him to miss two days of training camp. A subsequent follow-up test was passed.

The game, which was officially stopped with 7:30 left in the first period, was cancelled. The game will be made up on January 23, 2006.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Story Of The Amazing 1000 Count Sheets}

Story Of The Amazing 1000 Count Sheets

by

Ernest T. PetersonI just bought a fantastically thick featherbed for my king sized mattress. While I love the item, I’m afraid that I wasted my money because I can’t fit my 1000 count sheets over the thing. To be honest, between the featherbed and the sheets, I’ll take the 1000 thread count sheets any day.

Insomnia is a huge problem for me and my husband. He has trouble sleeping at night because I have insomnia. My husband has the residual effects of my tossing and turning all night. The featherbed was ordered to help me get some rest but in the meantime my sister bought me 1000 count sheets for the bed.

The first night that I slept on the 1000 count sheets I was amazed. I can’t remember being so relaxed and comfortable in my life. I was still excited about the pending featherbed but I was really satisfied with the 1000 thread count sheet set. Nothing beats a good night’s sleep.

When the featherbed arrived I was happy to see that it was in beautiful shape and so crisp and clean. I laid the thick mattress pad on the king size bed only to begin feeling a little apprehensive about my 1000 count sheets. There was no way I could fit the fitted sheet over the thick pad.

This doesn’t mean that I didn’t try. I’m glad no one was in the room to witness my struggle with the massive feather bed but I was determined to have my 1000 count sheets any way that I could. That turned out to be under the mattress pad instead of on top where they belong. I tried to sleep on the new bedding but I really missed the 1000 thread count sheet set that I had grow used to. After a restless night I decided to put the featherbed away so I could sleep peacefully.

I hated to waste the money that I spent on the thick mattress pad so I thought that I would offer it to my thoughtful sister. She snorted and said that there was no way she could fit her sheets over the feather bed. She just didn’t want bothered with the thing.

I guess that a featherbed is great for someone who can’t get a good night’s sleep on occasion. A person who has insomnia

is better off with nice 1000 count sheets. There is no way I’m sleeping without them.

Financial Action Task Force places United Arab Emirates on money laundering ‘grey’ list

Tuesday, March 8, 2022

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) placed the United Arab Emirates on its global grey list March 4 for “strategic deficiencies” in combatting “money laundering, terrorist funding, and proliferation financing”, subjecting it to heightened scrutiny.

The UAE joins 23 countries, including Middle East neighbours Jordan, Syria and Yemen, and Pakistan and Turkey elsewhere in Asia, on the list for active cooperation with the FATF. While less severe than a ‘black’ listing, which includes Iran and North Korea, it could damage the UAE’s business-friendly reputation.

It may also subject the regime to unfavourable rate adjustments, higher costs for transactions and increased competition with fellow Gulf state Saudi Arabia. An International Monetary Fund report published May 2021 found grey-listing resulted in an average negative impact of 7.6% of a country’s GDP, which would be USD27.3 billion of the UAE’s 2020 GDP.

Paris-based watchdog the FATF says grey-listing means “the country has committed to resolve swiftly the identified strategic deficiencies”. A November 2021 follow-up to a 2020 evaluation concluded progress had been made in four areas; the UAE is considered “compliant” or “highly compliant” in 36 of forty recommendations.

In 2018, the country passed a federal decree on money laundering to ensure compliance with international organisations, and has since dedicated four specialised courts toward prosecution. The UAE also formed an Executive Office to combat money laundering and terrorist financing in December 2020. However, the FATF urges improving risk management in certain industries and facilitating domestic and international investigations and prosecutions against money laundering.

They also recommend proactive investigation to identify suspicious transactions and sanctions evasion in its economy.

The Executive Office said: “The UAE will continue its ongoing efforts to identify, disrupt and punish criminals and illicit financial networks in line with FATF’s findings and the UAE’s National Action Plan”. It also pledged “close coordination with our international partners”. Former UAE Foreign Affairs Minister Anwar Gargash wrote on Twitter the UAE remains “resolute in strengthening strategic cooperation with our partners to address this global challenge”.

Katherine Bauer, senior Fellow at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy, criticised the UAE’s “inherent vulnerabilities to illicit finance due to its role as a regional commercial and financial hub”. The former United States Treasury official added the changes needed are not those “that can happen overnight”.

In 2016 the UAE was named in the Panama Papers leak as “home to a thriving trade in financial secrecy” by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). The leak implicated numerous Emirati officials in suspicious dealings, including Prime Minister Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is connected with a cybersecurity firm accused of espionage.

The ICIJ called the sheikhdoms “a center for financial crime”. It cited: “Mass surveillance and the monarchy’s firm grip on the courts and media make it difficult to challenge the system or expose suspect business dealings”. Jodi Vittori, a Fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, was quoted as saying: “the U.S. seems to have turned a blind eye to [the UAE’s] role in the facilitation of illicit finance, conflict minerals and organized crime.”

The decision to grey-list the UAE was made at the sixth plenary session of the FATF under a German presidency from March 2nd to 4th. Zimbabwe was removed from increased monitoring, and the organisation concluded France had a “robust and sophisticated” framework with room to improve.

Dating And Introduction Services}

Dating and Introduction Services

by

Gemma Ogden-10534Though most people meet their dates at social organizations, in their daily life and work, or are introduced through friends or relatives, and took their dating from there, the dating agency industry emerged strongly, but discreetly, in the Western world after World War II, mostly catering for the 2544 age group. Newspaper and magazine personal ads also became common as introduction services.

In the last five years, dating and courtship have seen changes due to online dating services and introduction services. Telecommunications and computer technologies have developed rapidly since around 1995, allowing people that are dating the use of home telephones with answering machines mobile phones, web-based systems or by visiting a matchmaking agency to find prospective partners. “Pre-dates” can take place by telephone or online via instant messaging, e-mail, or even video communication. A disadvantage is that, with no initial personal interview by a traditional dating agency head, Internet daters are free to exaggerate or lie about their characteristics.

While the growing popularity of the Internet took some time, now one in five singles is said to look for love on the Web, either by joining single dating sites or searching for a dating agency which has led to a dramatic shift in dating patterns. In 2004 research in the United Kingdom suggests that there were around 150 introduction services there, and the market was growing at around 20 percent a year due to, first, the very low entry barriers to setting up a dating site, and secondly, the rising number of single people. However, even academic researchers find it impossible to find precise figures about crucial statistics, such as the ratio of people dating to the large number of inactive members (whom an agency will often wrongly claim as potential partners, leaving them ‘on the books’ long after they have left) and the overall ratio of men to women in an agency’s membership. Academic research on traditional pre-Internet agencies suggests that most such agencies had far more men than women in their membership.

Traditionally, in many societies (including Western societies), in dating men were expected to fill the role of the pursuer. However, the anonymity of the Internet (as well as other factors) has allowed women to take on that role online. A recent study indicated that “women pay to contact men as often as the reverse, which is quite different from behavior in telephone-based dating system[s]” (from Wired magazine).

There is still plenty of room for a matchmaker to thrive, however, and only time will tell which industry wins out in the end.

An introduction agency we believe with good reason is the country’s most successful dating agency is a success in London called Drawing Down The Moon. It began in 1984 in a bookshop near the British Museum, bringing together people from the local business, professional and creative communities.

The many success stories have encouraged the staff to extend their dating agency in separate premises and we now have expanded into offices in Adam and Eve Mews, Kensington

Iranian International Master Dorsa Derakhshani discusses her chess career with Wikinews

Tuesday, April 14, 2020

In February 2017, the Iranian Chess Federation announced two teenage chess players, Dorsa Derakhshani and her younger brother Borna Derakhshani, were banned from representing the national team. The federation announced their decision although Dorsa Derakhshani had previously decided and informed the chess federation she did not wish to play for Iran.

Dorsa Derakhshani is currently 21 years old and holds the International Master (IM) as well as Woman Grand Master (WGM) titles. Her brother, Borna, plays for the English Federation and holds the FIDE Master title.

Dorsa Derakhshani was banned since she did not wear a hijab, an Islamic headscarf, while competing at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival in January 2017. Under the laws of Islamic Republic of Iran, hijab is a mandatory dress code. Her brother Borna Deraskhsani was banned for playing against Israeli Grand Master (GM) Alexander Huzman at the same tournament. Iran does not recognise the existence of Israel, and previously, Irani athletes have avoided playing against Israeli athletes.

Mehrdad Pahlavanzadeh, the president of the country’s chess federation, explained the decision to ban the players saying, “As a first step, these two will be denied entry to all tournaments taking place in Iran and in the name of Iran, they will no longer be allowed the opportunity to be present on the national team.” ((fa))Farsi language: ?????? ????? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??? ????? ?? ?? ???? ???????? ?? ?? ????? ? ?? ??? ????? ?????? ??????? ????? ??????? ? ???? ???? ???? ?? ??? ??? ?? ??????? ????. IM Dorsa Derakhshani, who currently studies at Saint Louis University in the United States and plays for the United States Chess Federation, discussed her chess career, time in Iran and the 2017 controversy, and her life in Saint Louis with a Wikinews correspondent.

SpaceX scrubs Falcon I rocket launch

Monday, November 28, 2005

SpaceX called off the much-delayed inaugural launch of their new Falcon 1 rocket on Saturday from Kwajalein’s Omelek Island launch site. The intent was to launch the U.S. Air Force Academy’s FalconSat 2 satellite, which will monitor plasma interactions with the Earth’s upper atmosphere and magnetosphere.

The launch was delayed, then finally cancelled after an oxygen boil-off vent had accidentally been left open. The oxygen was unable to cool the helium pressurant, which then proceeded to evaporate faster than it could be replenished. A main computer issue, probably serious enough to cause a scrub on its own, was also discovered.

This long-anticipated flight was originally expected to be launched in January 2005, however a series of setbacks forced a series of delays, with the flight most recently scheduled to be in early 2006. It was intended to be launched from the Kwajalein atoll in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

The maiden voyage was originally intended to launch from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California with a Naval Research Laboratory satellite and a Space Services Incorporated space burial payload.
