Saturn moon Enceladus may have salty ocean

Thursday, June 23, 2011

NASA’s Cassini–Huygens spacecraft has discovered evidence for a large-scale saltwater reservoir beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon Enceladus. The data came from the spacecraft’s direct analysis of salt-rich ice grains close to the jets ejected from the moon. The study has been published in this week’s edition of the journal Nature.

Data from Cassini’s cosmic dust analyzer show the grains expelled from fissures, known as tiger stripes, are relatively small and usually low in salt far away from the moon. Closer to the moon’s surface, Cassini found that relatively large grains rich with sodium and potassium dominate the plumes. The salt-rich particles have an “ocean-like” composition and indicate that most, if not all, of the expelled ice and water vapor comes from the evaporation of liquid salt-water. When water freezes, the salt is squeezed out, leaving pure water ice behind.

Cassini’s ultraviolet imaging spectrograph also recently obtained complementary results that support the presence of a subsurface ocean. A team of Cassini researchers led by Candice Hansen of the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Arizona, measured gas shooting out of distinct jets originating in the moon’s south polar region at five to eight times the speed of sound, several times faster than previously measured. These observations of distinct jets, from a 2010 flyby, are consistent with results showing a difference in composition of ice grains close to the moon’s surface and those that made it out to the E ring, the outermost ring that gets its material primarily from Enceladean jets. If the plumes emanated from ice, they should have very little salt in them.

“There currently is no plausible way to produce a steady outflow of salt-rich grains from solid ice across all the tiger stripes other than salt water under Enceladus’s icy surface,” said Frank Postberg, a Cassini team scientist at the University of Heidelberg in Germany.

The data suggests a layer of water between the moon’s rocky core and its icy mantle, possibly as deep as about 50 miles (80 kilometers) beneath the surface. As this water washes against the rocks, it dissolves salt compounds and rises through fractures in the overlying ice to form reserves nearer the surface. If the outermost layer cracks open, the decrease in pressure from these reserves to space causes a plume to shoot out. Roughly 400 pounds (200 kilograms) of water vapor is lost every second in the plumes, with smaller amounts being lost as ice grains. The team calculates the water reserves must have large evaporating surfaces, or they would freeze easily and stop the plumes.

“We imagine that between the ice and the ice core there is an ocean of depth and this is somehow connected to the surface reservoir,” added Postberg.

The Cassini mission discovered Enceladus’ water-vapor and ice jets in 2005. In 2009, scientists working with the cosmic dust analyzer examined some sodium salts found in ice grains of Saturn’s E ring but the link to subsurface salt water was not definitive. The new paper analyzes three Enceladus flybys in 2008 and 2009 with the same instrument, focusing on the composition of freshly ejected plume grains. In 2008, Cassini discovered a high “density of volatile gases, water vapor, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, as well as organic materials, some 20 times denser than expected” in geysers erupting from the moon. The icy particles hit the detector target at speeds between 15,000 and 39,000 MPH (23,000 and 63,000 KPH), vaporizing instantly. Electrical fields inside the cosmic dust analyzer separated the various constituents of the impact cloud.

“Enceladus has got warmth, water and organic chemicals, some of the essential building blocks needed for life,” said Dennis Matson in 2008, Cassini project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

“This finding is a crucial new piece of evidence showing that environmental conditions favorable to the emergence of life can be sustained on icy bodies orbiting gas giant planets,” said Nicolas Altobelli, the European Space Agency’s project scientist for Cassini.

“If there is water in such an unexpected place, it leaves possibility for the rest of the universe,” said Postberg.

Meteorite blamed for mysterious illness in Peru

Thursday, September 20, 2007

On Saturday local villagers claimed a meteorite slammed into a field outside of Carancas, near Lake Titicaca in the Puno region of Peru on the border of Bolivia. It emitted a sweet but noxious odor. It has now been blamed for a mass illness affecting roughly 200 villagers with “nausea, vomiting, digestive problems and general sickness,” according to a local health department official, Jorge López. “Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned,” said López.

Police officers who went to investigate the meteorite are among those who have fallen ill and been taken to Desaguadero Hospital. The impact of the meteorite left a crater 18 feet deep and 30 yards across in the Andean territory that is home to less than 1,000 people. Originally, the villagers thought a plane had crashed. Under consideration is the declaration of a state of emergency.

Peruvian Nuclear Energy Institute engineer Renan Ramirez said scientists who went to investigate the crater found no indication of radiation, although, the fumes from the crater were so pungent that one scientist said his throat and nose were irritated despite his use of a mask.

Villagers are said to be avoiding the local water out of fear of contamination. Sulfur, arsenic and other elements common in meteorites can react with ground water to produce fumes. Ursula Marvin, a meteor expert at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory in Massachusetts, said a meteorite “wouldn’t get much gas out of the earth” and that a more likely explanation for the health problems was the dust cloud caused when the rock hit the Earth.

Other explanations abound. Don Yeomans, head of the Near Earth Object Program at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said “Statistically, it’s far more likely to have come from below than from above,” noting that meteorites do not give off smells and it is likely the result of hydrothermal activity, such as a local gas explosion. Dr Caroline Smith, a meteorite expert with the Natural History Museum in London, thought more likely the villagers saw a common fireball and in the process of investigating it, did not find a ‘crater’ but “a lake of sedimentary deposit, which may be full of smelly, methane rich organic matter.” And one science blogger, David Syzdek, theorized that in fact the crater is a mud volcano “that is producing toxic gasses [sic] such as methane, water, and perhaps other hydrocarbons. Many hydrocarbons can cause illness.”

5 Tips To Welcome The Remote Work Model

Remote work may date back to the first industrial revolution, but the circumstances for its current rise are vastly different. Just when we thought we could rest easy came another wave and the announcement of a new, deadlier mutation in the coronavirus.

Sanitization and self-care measures are the norm, relegating frontline workers in white collar jobs to their home base until further notice. The stampede brought on the rise in remote global talent is another way of saying many of us will continue to work away from dedicated offices. And managers should get used to the idea of leading a remote team, some of whom they’re unlikely to meet in person anytime soon.

Instead of feeling like you’re losing control and track of what is happening workwise, it’s time to shape up your soft skills. Here are tips to welcome this stampede, and to ensure that you have everything you need to ensure deadlines and deliverables are met;

  • Regularize communication

A manager’s presence matters just as much as their team’s visibility. The more accessible you remain to members, the more aware you are of what is happening across different time zones. Flipping the other side of the coin, you also get updates on work progress from members, which include work completed, pending decisions you need to review and bottlenecks faced.

And communication is the way to go about it. The first step to onboarding and managing a remote team, is to standardize communication and divide them across the work hours designated. Use a world clock and timezone calendar to figure out the overlap hours for a global team, and arrange for the standard check ins to happen during these hours. It will help to send out a mail to participants after initiating remote work arrangements as to the frequency and expectation of availability for such meetings, so that they can be programmed into individual calendars.

  • Participate in team building activities

Who says teams can’t work hard and play hard when online?

With online team building puzzles, the rapport between co workers strengthens. Remote managers involving themselves in such team building activities will develop a better understanding of the dynamics within. More importantly, such managers would also know how individuals apply soft skills such as problem solving, creative thinking and strategizing in a non-work related context.

Facilitating such exercises to break up the monotony of work is one thing, but being a participant yourself is another. And the merits to it include recharging your team’s energy levels, bringing out the competitive and collaborative spirit and above all, showing that you have a fun side too. Your team is more likely to be themselves in a game or sport, letting you see who they are outside of work. The reason virtual team building is important is that it replicates social interactions enjoyed in-person. And it needn’t even cost you anything. A simple interactive quiz on social media suffices to get things started, and from there you can invite suggestions for the next activity your team would like you and them to try out!

  • Create realistic schedules

The best way to make sure that the right priorities are in sight and on track, is to create a realistic schedule. Put simply, the priority should be meaningful. It should be communicated in advance, with deadlines drawn up after taking into consideration the availability of members. Productivity apps can help you schedule status update meetings by the urgency, without disrupting existing schedules. A realistic schedule plugged in with anti-distraction applications such as krisp.ai or freedom, helps teams stay self-disciplined. It blocks websites and popups, mutes background noises and ensures that coworkers can go back to their workload.

  • Audit remote work hours

Given that the team you’re leading is now remote, tracking effort hours matter all the more. This is because it dictates invoicing, billing and expenses incurred for work, and therefore has to be audited. According to the American society for employers, time theft costs employers in the United States $11 billion a year. To prevent company hours from being misused in the form of extra overtime or proxy check ins, invest in remote employee monitoring and time tracking.

Such tools make use of facial recognition to verify that the person who logged in at a workstation or device is authorized to do so at that hour. It keeps people accountable and helps you save payroll costs by up to 22% annually.

Timesheet reports not only help you understand how time-intensive your projects are but also keeps remote employees visible and present. It can even help you estimate future time and expenses more accurately, based on present data. You can accordingly delegate work and assign priorities based on the information you have on the time it’ll take for the worker competent to complete it.

Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Australian man arrested at U.S. Capitol building

Tuesday, April 12, 2005

A 33-year old visitor to the United States, named Wen Hao Zhao from Sydney, Australia, was arrested at the Capitol building on Monday, after he was observed by police standing in a “statue-like pose” and carrying two suitcases.

When confronted by officers of the United States Capitol Police (USCP) who were called to the scene at 12:45 p.m. EST, he is reported to have been unresponsive to questioning. “He only would say at first that he wanted to speak to President Bush,” according to USCP Chief Terrance W. Gainer. Some reports suggest that the man was limited or unresponsive in his use of English.

The West Lawn area next to the Capitol building and an adjacent part of 1st Street was evacuated and tourists were briefly prevented from entering the building on the possibility that the suitcases may have contained a bomb.

Authorities X-rayed the bags and examined them for over 3 hours. One bag was found to contain only clothing. The other bag, which apparently was thought to contain wiring which might belong to an explosive device, was destroyed on-site with a water cannon; after which, the bag was found to have contained only common items such as a CD player, batteries, and a watch.

Zhao was arrested at 1:45 p.m. EST without resistance on charges of disorderly conduct; other more serious charges could be filed. However, Allen Doody of U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has indicated plans to deport Zhao back to Australia within a few days without charges. “We do not plan to charge him,” Doody said.

Zhao is dual-nationality Chinese-Australian, who entered the US legally on his Australian passport less than a week ago.

Thai junta partially lifts political ban

Tuesday, June 5, 2007

Political parties in Thailand have regained some of their freedoms, following an agreement on Tuesday by the government’s military-appointed Cabinet.

As a result of the deal, parties are now allowed to meet and hold activities, opening the way for elections that are tentatively planned for December. However, a ban on forming new political parties remains in effect, until at least next week. Government spokesman Nattawat Suthiyothin said a bill on new parties would be forwarded to the National Legislative Assembly. And the Cabinet says that the ban on leaders of dissolved political parties remains in effect.

Political gatherings and activities had been banned by the junta since the military’s overthrow of the civilian government in September of last year. But in the face of recent protests, the military’s ruling body, the Council for National Security, agreed on Monday to recommend that political activities be allowed.

The move by the Cabinet comes six days after a Constitutional Tribunal in which the former ruling party, Thai Rak Thai was ordered dissolved and its leaders, including ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra banned from politics for five years. Thai Rak Thai was found guilty of violations in the April 2006 general election. Another prominent party, the opposition Democrat Party, was also on trial, but was allowed to remain intact.

Though the junta has outlawed political gatherings, demonstrations have still been tolerated in Bangkok. One of the largest came on Saturday, when 6,000 supporters of a satellite television station, PTV, held a rally. The pro-Thaksin PTV has been taken off the air by the junta, as have several pro-Thaksin websites. The junta also ordered that text messages be sent to mobile-phone subscribers, asking them to stay away from demonstrations.

But the junta has shown signs of moving the nation back towards the democratic process, with the leader of the coup, Council for National Security chairman General Sonthi Boonyaratglin suggesting an amnesty for the banned political leaders. The idea was widely criticized, though, and Sonthi later retracted his statement, saying the amnesty notion had been proposed by the National Legislative Assembly.

Power2SME

The steel products occupy space in every household and industry. Steel is the strongest alloy known till the date. It is known for its strength and durability. For various industrial purposes, the raw steel is passed through multiple pairs of rolls to cut down on its thickness and make it uniformly thick. There are different types of rolling based on the temperature of the rolling metal. The major rolling types are Cold rolling and hot rolling. The metal sheets created after the cold rolling is known as Cold Rolling Sheets or CR Sheets. Such sheets are tremendously demanded in the market due to their great strength, wonderful finish and a selection of shapes.

Hot Rolled Sheets vs Cold Rolled Sheets

People often mistake the

cold rolled sheets

or CR sheets for Hot Rolled Sheets. Both types of sheets are different and used for different purposes. The CR sheet is basically the hot rolled sheet only that has been provided extra treatment in a room temperature to add to its strength and create various shapes. Such sheets have a great tolerance during the machining and fabricating processes.

The hot rolled metal sheets have a tough surface that is needed to be treated further to get a great finishing but the final surface obtained is perishable and hence it demands a great care during shipping or transportation. To avoid the chaos while distinguishing between hot and cold rolled sheets, one can look for the surfaces, edges and the distortion in the shape. Cold rolled sheets are often near to perfect but a bit fragile in comparison to the hot rolled sheet.

Applications of CR Sheets

The CR sheets are excessively used in various industries. Many engineering companies need coated surface containing sheets with tight tolerances and CR sheets completely lives up to the expectations. Such sheets have majorly used in manufacturing industries. The CR sheets are metallurgically designed to meet the special requirements of an industry like high strength, printability, great resistance to dent, great magnetic characteristics and so forth. The primary applications of CR sheets are

Bicycles

Automobile and aircraft exposed components

Furniture

Containers

Small and medium size appliances like dryers, washers, stove, refrigerator etc.

Frames for various facilities

Stamped parts

Choosing the Right CR Sheets

CR sheets are specially created for commercial applications. Shape, size and quality of the metal sheets are very important to consider while purchasing the CR sheets from the market. The smaller appliances or outer automobile body parts are made of cold rolled sheets or CR sheets. Such sheets are enduring and acquire a great finishing. If there is a doubt regarding the type of steel needed for your specific industrial purpose, you can contact the seller or an expert related to the metal rolling domain.

Finding the best

CR sheet

is indeed a tedious job. Understanding its types, quality and right prices can be confusing. At

power2sme

, we help you pick the best quality CR sheets and avail its strength, durability and other benefits to the fullest. Find everything related to CR sheets at a single platform.

Sultan Qaboos of Oman dies

Sunday, January 12, 2020

On Friday, Qaboos bin Said, the long-serving Sultan of Oman, died aged 79. He had recently had health problems, reportedly colon cancer. Tributes were paid by world leaders including the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The government of Oman announced three days of mourning. Before Qaboos’s burial at a family cemetery, his successor, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, attended funeral prayers at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat.

Qaboos became Sultan in 1970 after overthrowing his father, Sultan Said bin Taimur. By the time of his death, Qaboos’s reign was the longest in the Arab world. He was known for pursuing a neutral foreign policy and mediating in several Middle Eastern disputes as a “friend to all and enemy to none”. Most notably, he helped negotiate the Iran nuclear deal that was signed in 2015.

Recently there had been growing concerns over his health. Following a week-long stay in a Belgian hospital, he returned to Oman in the middle of December, although there was no official information on what treatment he had received.

Qaboos was born 1940 and received his education in India and the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, followed by a cultural tour of the world. Arriving back home in 1964, he turned to the study of Islamic law and Omani history.

Qaboos’s 1970 overthrew of his father was a bloodless British-backed coup. He began a programme of reform which changed his poorly-developed country into a relatively prosperous nation.

Qaboos did not have children, so Omani law allowed three days for a royal council to select a successor. If they could not do so, the council and other leaders would open a sealed letter from Qaboos naming his preferred successor.

When the royal council met, they chose to open the letter and acknowledged Qaboos’s cousin, Haitham, as the new Sultan. After the funeral, Haitham said he would continue Qaboos’s policies including a neutral approach to foreign affairs.

Gregory Kurtzer discusses plans for Rocky Linux with Wikinews as Red Hat announces moving focus away from CentOS

Friday, December 18, 2020

Last week, on December 8, US-based software company Red Hat announced plans to shift their focus away from CentOS in favour of CentOS stream.

Started in 2004, CentOS has been a free-of-cost free/libre open source software which provided binary-code compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) — Red Hat’s GNU General Public Licensed paid operating system. Gregory Kurtzer told Wikinews he started CAOS Linux around the time when Red Hat announced End of Life for their Red Hat Linux in favour of subscription-based Red Hat Enterprise Linux. CAOS was succeeded by CentOS when Rocky McGaugh, a developer of CAOS rebuilt the source code of RHEL to provide a monetarily free alternative. CentOS was absorbed into Red Hat in 2014, with Red Hat gaining the trademark rights of “CentOS”.

Red Hat also sponsors the development of the Fedora operating system. Until now, software development took place on Fedora, which was later adopted in RHEL, which the Red Hat maintained and provided support for, for those customers who had RHEL subscription. CentOS would then follow RHEL’s release cycle to provide the same features free of cost, but without the support.

Stream was announced in September 2019, just two months after Red Hat was acquired by IBM. CentOS Stream’s development cycle had new features added to it before the features became a part of RHEL. Stream receives more frequent updates, however, it does not follow RHEL’s release cycle.

With CentOS Stream, developments from the community and the Red Hat employees would take place beforehand on both Fedora, and Stream as a rolling release, before those features are absorbed into RHEL. CentOS followed the release cycle of RHEL and therefore it was a stable distribution. Features available in CentOS were tried and tested by Fedora, and then RHEL maintainers.

Red Hat’s Chief Technical Officer Chris Wright wrote in the announcement “CentOS Stream isn’t a replacement for CentOS Linux; rather, it’s a natural, inevitable next step intended to fulfill the project’s goal of furthering enterprise Linux innovation.” Since the announcement was made, many people expressed their anger on Internet Relay Chat (IRC), Reddit and CentOS project’s mailing list. CentOS 8’s End of Life (EOL) has been moved up from May 2029 to December 31, 2021, while CentOS 7 is expected to receive maintenance updates through June 2024, outliving CentOS 8.

Soon after Red Hat’s announcement, Kurtzer announced his intentions to develop Rocky Linux, to fill the role CentOS had been playing for so long. Kurtzer said Rocky Linux was named after Rocky McGaugh. “Thinking back to early CentOS days… My cofounder was Rocky McGaugh. He is no longer with us, so as a H/T [hat tip] to him, who never got to see the success that CentOS came to be, I introduce to you…Rocky Linux”, Kurtzer wrote. Wikinews discussed with Kurtzer the beginning of CentOS, and future of Rocky Linux.

While no formal date of release has been announced for Rocky Linux, Kurtzer said they are planning to release the CentOS replacement before the end of life of CentOS 8. Kurtzer also said Rocky Linux will run on both x86-64 and ARM-based processors, and CentOS users would be able to convert their OS to Rocky Linux just by running a single command.

Saying Rocky Linux is for the community, Kurtzer said he “take[s] the responsibility of ensuring that all decisions are in favor of the community and the project and free from corporate control” including his own company. Talking about the attention from the userbase Rocky Linux has received, Kurtzer said, “I have never seen an open community come together this fast and be this passionate about working together towards a common goal.”
