United States helped Kyrgyz pro-democracy programs

Sunday, April 3, 2005

Shortly before parliamentary elections were held in Kyrgyzstan, an opposition-run newspaper ran photographs of a palace under construction for since-deposed president Askar Akayev. This newspaper received grants from and was printed on a printing press financed by the US government.

The US government itself confirms this. In fact, nearly one year ago in May 2004, Lorne Craner, US Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor revealed:

We did a project recently… in Kyrgyzstan where there had only ever been one printing press. We funded the operation of another printing press there so that newspapers that were once unable to print day by day — due to censorship and lacks of facilities — are now able to print much more often, basically every day now.

Kyrgyzstan became the nation with the highest per-capita foreign assistance level in central Asia after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Most of the money came from the US, under the FREEDOM Support Act, passed in 1992 to help former Soviet republics in transition. Money ear-marked for Kyrgyz pro-democracy programs totaled about $13.3 million dollars last year.

According to a US State Department statement, the programs receiving the money “focus on improving political processes and accountability of government institutions, strengthening civil society and public advocacy, and supporting independent media.”

Akayev, in an interview with RIA Novosti, said that the opposition which had taken over the government in Kyrgyzstan was supported “with financial and technical support from the USA.”

As proof, he cited a report which was posted on the Internet and attributed to the US ambassador in Kyrgyzstan. “The scenario was carried out to a tee. In it he writes that president Akayev has to be toppled, removed. And because the country is key, a neighbor of China, with a Russian [military] base, it’s necessary to increase influence there.”

The New York Times described this report as “crudely forged” and Kyrgyzstan’s new leaders have pledged to keep both the US and Russian military bases in the country and maintain friendly diplomatic relations with Russia.

Scottish artist Alan Davie dies at age 93

Tuesday, April 8, 2014

The death of Scottish artist Alan Davie was announced on Sunday. Davie, 93, was known for his colourful abstract paintings.

Davie’s career also saw turns as a jeweler, a jazz musician, a lecturer, and a poet. Born in Grangemouth, near Falkirk, in 1920, he studied painting from 1938 to 40 at Edinburgh College of Art.

It’s an urge, an intensity, a kind of sexual need

His father was a teacher who dabbled in art and his mother’s family was musically inclined. Upon seeing Coleman Hawkins performing in a music shop in Edinburgh, Davie borrowed £600 from his father to buy himself a saxophone. After serving in the Second World War, at which time he wrote much poetry later transcribed by his father, Davie toured with Scottish jazz bands.

Davie’s work was admired by the likes of Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and David Hockney. Davie himself collected non-Western art and liked tattoos, graffiti, and ‘outsider art’. His final interview before death, with The Telegraph, gave an insight into how he viewed art: “It’s an urge, an intensity, a kind of sexual need[…] something I do from an inner compulsion, that has to come out.”

He initially avoided painting as a career at all, then spent several years earning money by other means whilst his paintings failed to sell. His exhibitions in the late 1950s, however, were highly successful and launched his career. He was in the habit of choosing titles for his art only after completion.

Despite a strong presence owing to his lengthy red beard and off-beat humour, he was shy; his international fame waned. Recent years have seen a revival of interest with price increases for his early art. London alone is host to three exhibitions this month including at the Tate.

Tate Britain calls Davie “one of the first British artists after the war to develop an expressive form of abstraction” producing “kaleidoscopic canvases[…] that the artist relates to his love of jazz”.

10 Things You Didn T Know About Colorado Springs Dental Implants

10 Things You Didn t Know About Colorado Springs Dental Implants

by

Michele M Johnson

We all know what dental implants are, sort of. We know that they replace missing teeth, but beyond that we don t seem to know much at all. Here are 10 interesting facts about Colorado Springs dental implants that truly set them apart from all conventional teeth replacement technologies and methodologies!

1.Exceptionally Strong: Dental implants are fabricated from titanium; the same metal professional tennis racquets and space shuttles are made of.

2.Osseointegration: Dental implants Colorado Springs undergo biological fusion with the jawbone, whereby the bone tissue actually bonds with the surface of the implant. This is termed osseointegration and is a unique benefit of titanium metal. It s also what enables dental implants to remain freestanding in the mouth and offer patients a fixed (non-removable) tooth replacement solution.

3.Tiny Titanium Screws: Dental implants are not visible as teeth themselves. Rather, they are tiny titanium screws used to support a ceramic tooth crown (in the case of single tooth replacement) or a dental prosthesis (in the case of full arch replacement). It s these latter components that are visible above the gum line as teeth.

4.Long Lasting: Dental implants, if cared for properly, can last several decades without the need for restoration or replacement. Some of the Colorado Springs patients that had their teeth replaced 40 years ago still have their original implants!

5.Strong, Natural Bite Function: Dental implants support a strong bite force that is very close to a natural bite force. This enables patients to eat all the foods they enjoy without struggling or discomfort. As a comparison, traditional removable dentures can only manage a bite force that is 25% of a natural bite. After 15 years, this can decrease to a shocking 3%. The result of this is frequently malnutrition.

6.Healthy Jawbone: Unlike any other tooth replacement technology, dental implants replace both the crown and the root of the missing tooth. This restores the stimulation the underlying bone needs to remain healthy. In the long run, dental implants help to prevent the hard tissue atrophy and resorption that can lead to further tooth loss.

7.Overall Oral Health: By filling in the gap/s left bare by the missing tooth/teeth, dental implants actually help to prevent infection from attacking the exposed tooth socket/s. Because a socket acts as natural traps for bacteria and food debris, filling it in with a replacement tooth goes a long way to preserve overall oral health.

8.Same Day Solutions: Most dental implant procedures even those designed to give Colorado Springs residents a complete set of new teeth can be completed in the space of a single day, sometimes even in as little as an hour! Patients can literally walk into the dental office without teeth and out again with new teeth.

9.Fantastic Success Rates: Single tooth replacement procedures using dental implants have a success rate of 98% while total arch replacement has a success rate of 95% over a period of 10 years.

10.Not Painful! According to many Colorado Springs patients testimonies, dental implants hurt no more than a straightforward tooth extraction! The use of anesthesia during the procedure eliminates any discomfort, while post-operative pain can easily be managed by over-the-counter analgesic medications, such as Advil or Tylenol. All in all, most patients report hardly experiencing any pain or discomfort at all.

Train derailed by collision with semi in Saskatchewan, Canada

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Twenty-four cars of a west-bound Canada Pacific train were thrown from the tracks after the train collided with a semi tractor-trailer in poor weather and visibility near Regina, Saskatchewan around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. The driver was rushed to hospital.

The accident took place on a level section of Highway 46 just north of Highway 1, about 25 kilometres east of Regina. The RCMP spokesperson reported the crossing is marked with lights, but weather may have played a role.

“Road conditions were wet and sloppy and it’s foggy,” RCMP Cpl. Brian Jones said to the CBC. The bad weather, including a heavy overnight snowfall, may have contributed to the accident.

Most of the 93 cars in the train were empty bulk transit cars, used for moving agricultural products such as grains. The RCMP report that neither train or truck were transporting any hazardous materials.

Cars big winner as 34th Annual Annie Awards handed out

Monday, February 12, 2007

Cars drove home the big prize last night, from the 34th Annual Annie Awards. The animation industry’s highest honor, ASIFA-Hollywood’s Annies recognise contributions to animation, writing, directing, storyboarding, voice acting, composing, and much more.

As mentioned, Pixar took home the big prize last night, after facing stiff competition from four other Happy Feet, Monster House, Open Season, and Over the Hedge.

But the biggest winner of the night didn’t get a “Best Animated Feature” nod at all. Flushed Away won five feature animation categories including Animated Effects (Scott Cegielski), Character Animation (Gabe Hordos), Production Design (Pierre-Olivier Vincent), Voice Acting (Sir Ian McKellan as Toad), Writing (Dick Clement, Ian La Frenais, Chris Lloyd, Joe Keenan, and Will Davies).

Over The Hedge won awards for Directing (Tim Johnson and Karey Kirkpatrick), Storyboarding (Gary Graham), and Character Design (Nicolas Marlet).

Of little surprise, Randy Newman won an Annie for Cars in the “Music in an Animated Feature Production” category. Newman has won many Oscars for his movie music, and has a nomination this year for the song “Our Town”. Newman didn’t attend the Annies, instead picking up a Grammy for “Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media”.

DisneyToon Studios’ Bambi II won “Best Home Entertainment Production”, while “Best Animated Short Subject” went to Blue Sky Studios’ No Time For Nuts, which is based on Ice Age.

“Best Animated Video Game” went to Flushed Away The Game, while a United Airlines ad named “Dragon” won a “Best Animated Television Commercial” Annie for DUCK Studios.

Everything You Need To Know About Touch Typing

By Linda Correli

Hunt – and – peck typing vs. touch – typing

Typing is an immanent part of work for predominant number of people. It is a daily task, the ability we can’t go without. It is no wonder that the necessity to master this skill has increased essentially in the recent years. It led to the emergence of the considerable amount of computer courses, which were flooded with those who eagerly wished to master typing as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, the popularity of courses was brought down by various computer self-tutors, which offered amazingly fast programs to master typing.

It was natural that the typing skills were tried to be improved. People aimed at equalizing quality and quantity. Hence, the method which combined all the requirements to typing with personal approach to each user was invented and called touch-typing. Touch typing means to engage in typing without having a look at the keyboard. The fingers are trained to locate the keys by position.

It is an intrinsic to the human beings to bring the development of the skills to perfection, to introduce automation to the daily routine, to simplify life by all means, making it more enjoyable. Same was in the case of touch – typing.

Touch-typing has become an essential, even mandatory skill these days no matter what line of work anyone does. Touch-typing is a method of typing, where the typist uses the sense of touch finding the proper keys rather than the sight. This method of typing is considered to be highly effective, as it redoubles the productivity of work and allows the typist to concentrate not on the search of proper keys while typing but on the sense of the information he types. In such a way the typist avoids the process of continuous and time consuming proof reading and makes only some minor editing after typing. The quantity of the misprints reduces twice.

It was counted that using the touch – typing method allows touching 60+ words per minute. People using the touch – typing method have much more advantages in comparison with the ‘hunt – and – peck’ typists. Hunt – and – peck typing or so called two – fingered typing is slower than touch – typing, using this method the typist required to find each key by sight, instead of relying on the memorized position of the keys.

It takes from 30 to 40 minutes to type one page of the text by the ‘hunt – and – peck’ method and only 5 or even 4 minutes by the touch typing method. So it helps to blueprint the time more rationally. At the same time general culture of labor increases. There is an important rule of touch typing which makes the technique of this method easier and distinguishes it form the ‘hunt-and-peck’ method. The less quantity of keys falls at one finger, the quicker the typing is.

Mastering the touch – typing and utilizing it in practice also helps to preserve health. As touch typists don’t have to shift the gaze from the keyboard to the screen, so the eyes don’t get tired and the eyesight doesn’t damage. Consequently, touch – typists are able to cope with the larger scopes of work and get tired less after the working day. At last, touch – typing leaves more time for the personal life and lets you enjoy your work.

Touch – typing software

How is it possible to master and become familiar with touch typing? There are a great variety of programs, which were specially elaborated to teach touch – typing. Preparing this article I’ve got acquainted with a stunning number of the freeware and read a lot of polar comments about different programs which teach touch typing. KAZ – Learn To Touch Type in 90mins v17

is designed for all ages from 5 to 95 and can be utilized in all versions of Windows to XP and Mac OS 8, 9 and X on same CD ROM”.

Touch – typing technique

How does touch typing method work? Everything is simpler than can seem. The keyboard is divided in the areas; moreover each area corresponds to the appropriate quantity of fingers, for instance keys QAZWSX should be typed with a little finger. The position of the hands also depends on the areas; your left hand’s fingers should be placed on the home row keys ASDF and your right hands’ fingers should be on the keys JKL;. The letters on the keyboard are positioned so that the most frequently used letters are placed in the central row and are pressed with the forefingers.

By the way, there are a lot of different variants of layouts. The type of the layout is also important in the development of the technique of typing. The most habitual and accustomed is QWERTY, moreover it is the most frequently used layout, but according to the results of testing Dvorak proved to be more effective as it increased the speed of typing for 20 – 40 percents.

In touch typing not only the correct position of the hands and the type of the layout are significant, but the position of the body also plays an essential role. Your posture should be straight, legs shouldn’t be crossed, palms and fingers should be loose as though they rest over the keyboard. Imagine that you are having an apple in your hand and it is going to slip. You should hit the keys lightly and abruptly. The quieter the sound from the keyboard is, the better it is. Touch the keys with the finger cushions and after the hit withdraw the finger from the key.

As an evidence of all above said, I want to tell you the story of my friend Alex who mastered touch typing method by means of exhausting and systematical training. He began with the typing of various documents in his first job. As he told me later from the very first day of his work he understood that his method of typing was too far from the perfect and proved to be inefficient. In a word it was in the red. So he made up his mind to change this situation somehow. He bought a touch typing tutor and set to work. He trained systematically every day. With the time past he told me that he felt that his fingers had memorized the position of each key. He was consistent with his studying, he moved gradually from the simple tasks to the more complicated ones and in three months he mastered touch typing method. Now he is able to touch type 300 symbols in a minute. One practical and proved advice he gave: It is better to start learning to type with the touch typing method, as it is more troublesome to learn again from the ‘hunt-and-peck’ method.

Hence, I recommend you not to procrastinate and to set to touch typing right now. Remember “Knowing how to study is like knowing how to fish. It is a set of learning skills that lasts a lifetime and brings many rewards. Just as there are ways to know that you are a competent fisherman, there are ways to develop skills competency.” And one of them is touch typing.

Britain to replace Trident nuclear missile system

Friday, November 24, 2006

The British Cabinet decided that Britain will retain its nuclear deterrent by replacing the Trident missile system carried on submarines, in its first meeting on the subject yesterday. The case for considering land-based and airborne systems made by former Defence Minister Geoff Hoon was rejected.

The Cabinet agreed that three or four new submarines should be built to carry the new missiles, but the number of nuclear warheads to be carried by each vessel will be decided at a later date. The existing fleet of four Vanguard class submarines, even if refitted, is due for decommissioning by 2024 at the latest. The time for design and construction is expected to be 17 years, so there is a need for an early decision. Chancellor Gordon Brown is reported as being keen to get construction started as soon as possible, in order to retain the skills of the existing workforce.

Some Cabinet Ministers thought to oppose the replacement of Trident, who worried that there might be a breach of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty or who had concern that the Labour party had not been consulted sufficiently. They include Margaret Beckett and Peter Hain, who, until recently, was a member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. The Cabinet Ministers expressed themselves content to carry out consultation and have a debate in Parliament in February.

Some 200 Members of Parliament have demanded that Parliament debate alternatives. It was agreed that a white paper for this purpose would be published before Christmas and a period of consultation would follow. Parliament would be asked to vote on the Cabinet’s proposal—not to choose between alternative systems, but to support the Cabinet’s choice “in principle.” Although the Government, with Conservative support, is most likely to get approval for its plan, Jack Straw, Leader of the House, has announced that the vote will be whipped.

2008 Leisure Taiwan launched in Taipei World Trade Center

Saturday, July 19, 2008

This year’s Leisure Taiwan trade show (a.k.a Taiwan Sport Recreation and Leisure Show) started yesterday, with 131 companies participating including sports media companies such as ESPN and VideoLand Television, businesses selling sports equipment and fitness clubs.

There were also a variety of sports being played in the arena built for the trade show. The events included a 3-on-3 basketball tournament, free style shooting, and bicycle test-riding. In addition, conferences discussed issues related to sports and physical education.

A major topic in the trade show was energy-efficiency and, as a result, bicycles and similar sports equipment were being heavily promoted.

Next Tuesday, companies from the electronics industry plan to promote their industry at “2008 Digital E-Park.” In previous years, organizations from the electronics industry have showcased their products at Leisure Taiwan instead of at the Digital E-Park, so this move has reduced the number of markets covered by Leisure Taiwan.
