The recycling of copper objects is big business for recycling centers and scrap-metal collectors. It is one of the most highly prized recyclable metals that exists. Here are some interesting trivia tidbits about copper and Copper Recycling Hartford CT.

* Experts say that recycling copper saves as much as 90% of the energy that it would take to make copper from ore that is virgin.

* Only 20 copper mines are responsible for 99% of the copper that is generated within the United States.

* While copper is considered a non-renewable natural resource, it has been estimated by scientists that a mere 12% of reserves has been mined.

* Over half of the copper that is being currently recycled is considered “new scrap”. This source mainly comes from consumer electronics that contain computer chips. It is considered to be crucial to making sure that all electronic devices be recycled properly to avoid ending up in a landfill.

* Because copper does not experience degradation during the recycling process, some of the copper in use today could actually date back as far as 10,000 years ago.

* Copper is one of the best conductors of electricity that exists. It is second only to silver in its conductibility factor.

* In ancient times, copper replaced stone as the material of choice to fabricate tools and weapons from. This ushered in the Bronze Age.

* Copper ranks third on the list of metals that are most prized by industry. This is due to its aforementioned high conductibility factor along with its extreme malleability and ductility. It is bested only by iron and aluminum in its demand.

Gunman killed outside Colorado governor’s office

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

A man identified as Aaron Richard Snyder showed up on Monday around 2:25 p.m. outside the Colorado Capitol offices of Governor Bill Ritter. He was carrying a 357-caliber 7 shot Smith and Wesson revolver with 20 extra rounds of ammunition and started screaming “I am the emperor” and “I am here to take over the state”.

When he was confronted by a Colorado State trooper, Snyder opened his jacket showing that he was carrying a gun. The trooper ordered Snyder to drop the gun, but instead he moved “menancingly” in the direction of the trooper who then shot him once in the head and twice in the chest.

Snyder died from the multiple gunshot wounds on the floor of the Capitol office building. The Capitol went on a full lockdown with employees, tour groups and visitors in the building at the time ordered to stay where they were.

Governor Ritter was interviewing a judge candidate in his office at the time of the shooting. He held a press conference on the Capitol step two hours later.

Mr. Snyder was under doctors care for delusional behavior. The Northglenn, Colorado police issued a BOL “Be On the Lookout” to all law enforcement agencies in Colorado for Snyder and his car, a 2004 black Kia, around 25 minutes before the shooting occurred.

Amsterdam pet shop owner creates beer for dogs

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Correction — February 8, 2007 Terrie Berenden’s pet shop is located in the town of Zelhem, not Amsterdam as stated in the article & title. Zelhem is approximately 135 km (85 miles) from Amsterdam

A woman in The Netherlands who uses her dogs to hunt in Austria has decided to give her dogs a new kind of treat: beer.

Terrie Berenden, a woman who owns a pet shop in Amsterdam, created a non-alcoholic beer for her dogs which is made from malt and a beef extract. The beer is called Kwispelbier (‘kwispelen’ means “wagging of a [dog’s] tail” in Dutch), and was put onto shelves just last week.

“Once a year we go to Austria to hunt with our dogs, and at the end of the day we sit on the verandah and drink a beer. So we thought, my dog also has earned it,” said Berenden.

According to Berenden, owners can enjoy the new beer as well, but she also stated that it will cost owners about four times as much to drink the beer than to buy a ‘human beer.’ A bottle of the dog beer sells at about $2.14.

The slogan for the new dog beer is “a beer for your best friend” and Brenden hopes that the product will grab international attention. Requests for the beer are already coming from the United States, England and Japan.

“We are overwhelmed with it. From America, England and Japan we have (received) mail and we are just going to think about it, how we can bring it on the market there,” said Brenden.

Once you have these three bases covered, hop online and get ready to jazz up your cell phone!

SouthernLINC

Verizon calls its ringtones VZW Tones, which are available on all Get It Now enabled cellular phones or online at Verizons website. Verizon phones and its website allow users to preview ringtones and browse by different categories (like Whats Hot and Whats New). AT&T (formerly Cingular Wireless)

AT&T offers subscribers the option to join the Tone Club, a service that allows you to download ringtones every month at a discount. Subscribers can choose from a 3- , 6-, or 9-pack set. Charges for ringtones are reflected on monthly wireless bills. AT&T customers can search for ringtones in one of three ways: online at the AT&T Wireless website, on cellular phones via Media Net (your wireless phones version of the internet), or via text messaging. Once the ringtone is transmitted to your phone, youll receive a series of prompts that will indicate how to save your ringtone as a default or a specific setting.

Cricket

Cricket offers countless downloads through its web browsers on all web-enabled phones, allowing Cricket users to customize their phones with the hottest games, tunes and applications around. To make buying even easier, Cricket offers a simple click and buy process on its mobile phones, allowing customers to easily purchase and install their downloads in just a few short minutes. For customers who are unsure if their phone supports downloads, be sure to visit Crickets website and view the list of compatible phones, which include Kyocera, Motorola, Nokia and Samsung models.

Other Download Sources

First penis transplant reversed after two weeks

Friday, September 22, 2006

Two weeks after Chinese surgeons successfully transplanted a donated penis onto an unidentified 44-year-old man, they were requested to remove it. Despite functioning perfectly and having been physically accepted by the body, the patient and his wife asked for the penis to be amputated, due to the severe psychological trauma they had both suffered.

A team of surgeons led by Dr Hu Weilie took 15 hours to attach the penis, which was donated by the family of a 22-year-old brain-dead patient. Doctors have successfully re-attached patients’ own severed members in the past, but this was the first use of a second-party penis.

The psychological rejection of the penis is not unusual from a medical point of view; in 2001 surgeons removed the world’s first transplanted hand from donee Clint Hallam, who wanted the “hideous and withered” hand to be removed because he had become “mentally detached” from it. The team that led the transplant have since performed the world’s first double arm transplant.

Nokia appoints Microsoft Business Division Head as chief executive

Sunday, September 12, 2010

The Finnish communications corporation Nokia announced that its Head will change on September 21. The previous chief executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo will continue to chair in non-executive capacity. The head of Microsoft Business division Stephen Elop will take the position. It is the first time a non-Finn becomes Nokia president and chief executive.

The change follows Nokia’s fall in world markets. It includes a decrease in Nokia’s American market share to less than ten percent after failed negotiations with a number of leading American phone providers. An analyst at a market analyst company Canalys Pete Cunningham said, “Despite holding 38 percent market share of the smartphone market, Nokia’s failure to compete with the iPhone and high-tier Android devices, combined with its lack of progress in gaining significant traction in the United States, has led to press and investor dissatisfaction.”

Some commenters suggested that Nokia chose Mr. Elop partly because he is a Canadian, following criticism of American candidates by the Finnish press. However a Nokia spokesman rejected this, saying, “Nationality was not a selection criteria.”

Stephen Elop was president and CEO of the graphics and web-development software house Macromedia prior to its acquisition by Adobe in 2005. He then joined Microsoft as President of Microsoft’s Business Division in January, 2008. Commenting on his new role he said, “Nokia has a unique global position as well as a great brand upon which we can build. The Nokia slogan clearly states our key mission: Connecting People, which will acquire new dimensions as we build our portfolio of products, solutions and services.”

In the announcement the Chairman of the Nokia Board of Directors Jorma Ollila stressed an expected shift of focus from hardware to software. “His [Stephen Elop’s] strong software background and proven record in change management will be valuable assets as we press harder to complete the transformation of the company. We believe that Stephen will be able to drive both innovation and efficient execution of the company strategy in order to deliver increased value to our shareholders”.

Nokia stated in an official blog post, “Nokia is transitioning from a hardware manufacturer of mobile devices to a software and solutions business. …Stephen’s background in the software industry is one of his key strengths.”
