Feburary 2009 News of New Hope
|
|
|
| Friends and Members of New Hope UMC,
This past Sunday was a very long day! After the service the Administrative Council met to discuss 2009. While it was long and grueling we accomplished quite alot! I want to thank each person who attended and say; "job well done!"
A few of the topics:
- New ministries and updates to current ministries we will undertake at New Hope. Ministries that did not work or does not work will be discarded in an effort to streamline our effectiveness of bringing about the transformation of our community and making disciples of Christ.
- See"featured ministry sections for some of the details
- Making sure we have dates and times of events at New Hope in order to keep the congregation better informed
- Empowering the committees and chairs to "do the job" they are elected to, this means:
- Clear Leadership
- Integrity
- Respect
The single-minded goal? 2009 will become the year New Hope UMC becomes the "New Hope of the Panhandle!"
Shalom,
Hans

I hope you will join us for this important service of reflection

A Thought
The month of February brings about lots of things. Some things end; the super bowl brings about the conclusion of the 2008 football season. And, of course Valentine's Day is on the 14th (That is a hint for you husbands!)
But yet some things begin; Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent.
We all may remember Lent in this fashion; giving up meat or giving up something. And, while that is a sign of Christian discipleship there is another we all seem to forget. That is to take up something!
Jesus tells us in Matthew 16:24; "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me..."
It is my belief that our "cross" can be something that we need to end in our lives or it could be something we need to begin in our lives. Our "cross" is something that holds us back, that prevents us from letting Christ meet us at our point of need. And, our need is for His love and grace to be in our lives.
So, when you come to the Ash Wednesday service, reflect on two things; "what can I end in my life that will help bring me closer to His love and, what can I begin that will begin that will bring me closer to His grace?"
Shalom,
Hans

Why Do We?
Why do we say the Apostles' Creed each week?
The Apostles' Creed contains the core beliefs that the Christian Church has taught since the Council of Nicea in 325 AD, which were revised in 381 AD, and have been passed on generation to generation . This is staggering, if you stop and think about it. It is important to understand that we are a part of something much bigger than ourselves, our denomination, our country, and even our time. The church of Jesus Christ spans century and millennia, as well as beyond state and nation. When we say that "we believe in the holy catholic church", we are simply using the traditional definition of "catholic", with a small "c", which means universal. Therefore, by saying the Apostle's Creed we state that we understand and believe we are connected to every Christian in the world of all denomination, no less than all of Christ's followers around the globe. We now share that Good News that has been passed on to us since the time of Christ and the first Christians as found in the book of Acts chapter 2.
